Developing cliché claim and copying other person"s opinion have been the main problems followed by the failure to develop sufficient examples to support the claim and eliminate the number of grammatical and mechanical error in students" essays. I also tried to find out the reason through some discussions both with students and colleagues. It appeared that students reading habit is unsatisfying and as the result they do not expand their critical thinking skill. The other significant reason is students mostly think that writing is a difficult assignment. Writing, especially on argumentation, is essential for academic purpose. Therefore the teaching of writing should develop both students writing skill and critical thinking that support their academic study skills. Such approach should also cover more socially oriented activities meaning that it is not merely an assignment to be read by the teacher. Tribble (1997) states that writing should focus on the way in which writers and texts need to interact. Writing learners, therefore, need to develop their skill through process approach which can help them to have better understanding academic writing perspective (Herdiah, 2005; Laksmi, 2006; and Siu, 2007). Accordingly, writing should also incorporate the teaching of critical thinking in EFL instruction (Triastuti, 2006). At the beginning students were introduced to how to find the issue for WHAT TO WRITE. They need to get involved in interest mapping activity. In potency mapping, students are trying to discover the following: what my area of interest is, the kinds of topic I look for when I browse internet and the issues I couldn"t miss. In the classes, it was found that their interest mostly covering the topic on music, fashion, sport, teen"s lifestyle, and travelling. Whereas, the unfavorable topics are political issue and education. Afterwards, students conducted brainstorming in groups having the same interest. On the next phase the students started planning ahead on HOW TO BEGIN WRITING by making an outline and present it in class conference. Their friends contributed a lot of ideas to support the proposed claim. Later, the students were assigned to find related data from various resources to get as many examples as possible to strengthen their claim. This is related to the activity to decide WHICH FACT SUPPORTS THE CLAIM. Their writing draft was checked by their friends in peer-editing. The comments given on HOW TO ELABORATE THE CLAIM were used to revise the draft before the final draft was submitted. As the last process, the evaluated draft was published in the form of mini magazine to be distributed to other students. This last activity has become the most favorable part for the students. At the end of the semester, some benefits attained are as follow: (1.) students started writing more easily, (2.) they participated actively in class conference, (3.) reading skill is also promoted, (4.) no more plagiarism found, (5.) error in diction and grammar can be minimized by learning from others, (6.) reaching larger audience by distributing the magazines to other classes, and (7.) they are challenged to write more productively.

The assessment is done to Indonesian students learning English language at Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University. The identification of factors affecting their critical thinking development would contribute to the further aspects relating to the establishment of critical thinking based instruction in EFL teaching and learning process in Indonesia. The result of this particular study has shown the fact that most of the respondents have strong awareness of the importance of reading habit, the time management and broadening this learning sources from internet. However, this notion might not be well implemented or their views which are not practiced into reality due to various aspects. The result of this study also reveals that a notable factor affecting the ease to express critical thinking is the language proficiency. A critical thinker can express his or her thought well by means of good language use either in spoken or written form Keywords: critical thinking, culture background, family background, learning strategies I.

The current five year studies show that news writers maintain engagement with their readers by their stances towards their point of views. This study aimed to find the attitudinal stances of two Pakistani Online newspapers i.e. 'Dawn' (alternative newspaper) and 'The News' (mainstream newspaper). The newspaper's inclination was identified through its language. To discover the newspapers' stances, Martin and White (2005) 'Appraisal Analysis' framework was employed on '2' news reports comprising of '5013' words on Prime Minister Imran Khan's Speech at 74th United Nations' session along with Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough (1995). However, the study of valency in verbal communication still needs more exploration. This study investigated the types of valency and its arguments used by Ariana Jalia, a 6-year-old child, in her spontaneous utterances during the interview on ‘Steve TV Show’. As a qualitative descriptive study, the purpose was to gain a deep understanding of valency and its arguments found in the child's speech. In the field of semantics, the findings of this study indicated that the utterances produced by Ariana contained four types of valency zero, twelve types of valency one, and three types of verb valency. In addition, the semantic analysis investigated the thematic roles assigned to the argument verbs used by the child. Viewed from the agents, themes, causes, and topics of what Ariana described in her narrative, she employed transitive verbs. The findings shed light on t...

The tenth graders at the National Immersion Senior High School (NISHS) Ponorogo are less able to explore the potential of literature in themselves. This research aims at helping the students by using hypnotic writing approach to improve the students' writing poetry. It employs an experimental research design by comparing the scores of the writing skills after implementing hypnotic writing. The result of the t.test is 6.09, compared with the value of the t.table with the degree of freedom (d.b = N - 1 = 20 - 1 = 19) = 2.09 and the significance level used is 5%. Therefore, it is clear that the value of t.test is higher than t.table (6.09 2.09). The finding shows that the post-test scores improve significantly. It means that the improvement of the ability to write English poetry through hypnotic writing in tenth-grade ...

This study investigates the direct and indirect contributions of debate, critical thinking dis'12position, and self-confidence to improve speaking skills. The design of this research is path analysis and uses AMOS 24 in the data analysis. 67 out of 72 students who participated in the debate competition at East-Java English Club 4 became the sample of this research. Questionnaires were used to determine students' perceptions of debate, critical thinking disposition, and self-confidence. In addition to the questionnaire, a speaking test using the Student Oral Language Observation Matrix (SOLOM) was used to measure speaking proficiency. The findings show a significant direct debate contribution to students' critical thinking, self-confidence, and speaking skills. For indirect contribution, there is a significant contribution from debate to speaking skills through critical thinking and a significant contribution from debate to speaking skills through self-confidence. From these results, recommendations for future researchers are about how to implement the in-class debate method in the realm of experimental research to develop the three variables previously mentioned.

Consequently, the children are invited as early as possible to start learning in a formal institution such as pre-kindergarten children, or known as Early Childhood Education (PAUD). This study employs a qualitative research method focusing on how to talk with early childhood so that effective communication occurs. The technique used in this study was observation and in-depth interviews with teachers in a PAUD. In this study, PAUD teachers were selected with the category of having adequate experience in PAUD teaching at least five years. The PAUD chosen uses bilingual, namely Indonesian and also teaches the introduction of Arabic through short letter learning and prayer. The finding shows that the strategy of talking to early childhood is conveying the message by first exemplifying what the teacher asks students and as much as possible without coercion. In this case, the suggested strategies cover (1) learning attitude with verbal, visual stimuli; (2) full interaction with the proper eye contact and gestures; (3) conditioning classes to support interaction; and (4) maximizing context functions to facilitate understanding.
