Summary

Greek helmet made in South Italy, 350-300 BC. Bronze. The elaborate decoration on this helmet suggests that it was strictly ceremonial and not intended to be worn into battle. Details added in relief and incision include eyebrows, hair curls over a diadem (headband), and cheek guards adorned with side locks and a striding animal. The crowning griffin'shead, wings, and spiraled feather holders were added last.
