Summary
Brushtail possum exhibiting exudative dermatitis in facial region, with necrotised tissue in the nasal region exposing bone. Exudative dermatitis is common in Australian possums and is believed to be the result of immuncompromisation associated with stress. Supervening infection occurs, often of staphylococcal origin. This condition is often seen in young males attempting to assert territory in overcrowded (usually urban) areas. Exudative dermatitis is difficult to treat, and relapses are common.
