Summary
An ashtray carved out of banded ironstone, showing the clear red-white banding that resulted from photosynthetically produced oxygen during the day reacting with soluble iron compounds to form red, insoluble iron oxide, which precipitated out to form the red bands. Since there was no free oxygen in the atmosphere at night, the iron remained soluble and only white sediment settled on the bottom of the lake/lagoon.
