Location of Karachi City railway station within Karachi |
Karachi City (Urdu: کراچی شہر ریلوے اسٹیشن ) (formerly McLeod station) is the first and the oldest railway station in Pakistan. It is commonly called "City station" or "City railway station" in Karachi. It is situated near Habib Bank Plaza on I. I. Chundrigar Road in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.[2] This railway is the Head Office of Karachi Division of Pakistan Railways.
Due to the lack of space, most of the passenger trains and traffic have been moved to Karachi Cantt railway station.
History
It was around 1855 when the commissioner of Sindh, Bartle Frere, suggested that the government should construct a railway line between the Harbour of Karachi and Korti. Eventually, after several surveys, the construction of a railway line from the Port of Karachi was begun. Later, on May 3, 1864, public transportation between Karachi and Kotri began from Mcleoad Station (now Karachi City Station).[2]
Facilities
The Karachi City railway station has all basic facilities. A parking lot is here to park vehicles. It has Current and Advance Reservation Offices for book seats in trains. Food and drink stalls and book Shops are found on platforms 1. Cargo and Parcel service is also available here.
