List of submissions to the 54th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

The following 25 films, all from different countries, were submitted for the 54th Academy Awards in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The highlighted titles were the five nominated films, which came from Italy, Japan, Poland and Switzerland. Hungary won the award with the film Mephisto.

Perhaps the most notable submission was from the Soviet Union. Although it is rare for documentaries to be submitted in this category, the USSR elected to send a 2-hour documentary on the 1980 Moscow Olympics, which the United States had boycotted two years before.
