Hurricane Beryl () was a deadly and destructive Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that caused extensive damage across impacted parts of the Caribbean, the Yucatan Yucatán Peninsula , and the Gulf Coast of the United States in late June and early July 2024. It was the earliest-forming Category 5 hurricane on record during any season in and the Atlantic and only second such storm in the month of July, the other being 2005's Hurricane Emily. Beryl was also the strongest hurricane to develop within the Main Development Region (MDR) of the Atlantic before the month of July. The second named storm, first hurricane, and first major hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, Beryl was an atypical hurricane that, in addition to causing widespread destruction across its path, broke many meteorological records for the month months of June and July, including location, primarily for formation and intensity and longevity. Additionally, it was the strongest storm by wind speed to develop in the month of June on record and the strongest in that month since Hurricane Alma in 1966.
Beryl developed from a tropical wave that left the coast of Africa on June 25. After forming on June 28 in the Main Development Region, it began rapidly intensifying as it moved west through the central tropical Atlantic. On July 1, Beryl made landfall on the island of Carriacou in Grenada as a high-end Category 4 hurricane, causing extensive damagetotal devastation. The hurricane intensified further as it entered the Caribbean Sea, peaking as a Category 5 hurricane early the next morning with maximum sustained winds of 165 145 kn and a minimum central pressure of , before slowly weakening over the next few days due to more unfavorable conditions wind shear as it passed south of Jamaica and then the Cayman Islands. It briefly re-intensified to into a Category 3 hurricane before weakening again as it made landfall in Tulum, Quintana Roo , as a high-end Category 2 hurricane on July 5. Crossing After weakening into a tropical storm over the Yucatán Peninsula, where it quickly weakened to a tropical storm, the system moved into the Gulf of Mexico, where it gradually reorganized into a Category 1 hurricane on July 8, just before making a its final landfall near Matagorda, Texas. Beryl quickly slowly weakened over land as it accelerated to the northeast, eventually becoming post-tropical over the state of Arkansas the following dayon July 9 and dissipating over Ontario on July 11.
Effects Damage and casualties from the hurricane were widespread. Beryl caused catastrophic damage on Grenada's northern islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique and on several of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines's southern islands , such as Union Island and Canouan where many structures were damaged or destroyed. In Venezuela, three six people were killed and several were one person went missingas a result of the storm. Sustained damage was also recorded in the Yucatan as wellYucatán, although it was relatively minorgenerally limited to trees, power poles, and roofs, as well as some flooding. HoweverIn the United States, during Beryl's landfall in the U.S. The state of Texas experienced severe flooding and wind damage. And , with reports of at least 7 people died due to the storm 36 dead in the city of [[Houstonregion. Additionally, the outer bands of the hurricane produced a prolific prolific tornado outbreak as well, with many significant tornadoes reported confirmed in Texas and , Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana, New York, and Ontario. As of July 925, a total of 20 64 fatalities have been confirmed, and preliminary damage estimates are more than US60000000006860000000.

Beryl also became the first tropical system on record to undergo rapid intensification in the Main Development Region of the Atlantic during the month of June. Further, it intensified from tropical storm to Category 5 hurricane in only 42 hours. Six Only six other Atlantic storms are known to have achieved this rate of intensification, with Beryl the only one to do so earlier than September. According to an analysis by ClimaMeter, a project of the Climate and Environment Sciences Laboratory, Beryl's extreme winds and heavy precipitation were strengthened by climate change.
