1350–1400; Middle English < Latin scōria < Greek skōría, derivative of skôr dung

As the Romance languages are based on Latin, that would explain how the word is in both Spanish and Italian

I did not know this.  I knew the word only as a type of volcanic rock that's used a lot in gardens and road construction.  In metallurgy it's the slag or dross left behind after smelting.

Etymology is fascinating!
