Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis is my favorite anime ever and might also be my favorite movie of all time. I've got a soft spot for artificial life forms, and Tima's one of my favorite little 'bots ever. Needless to say, being a Gadget fan too, I realized that there's a lot of similarities between the two characters, not just in terms of visual appearance. They're both kind, naive, socially awkward and mechanically-inclined.
I drew this not too long after the movie came out and, until today, I'd completely forgotten about it. I was cruising through some of my old art this morning, saw this sketch and went, 'How the HELL did I never finish this!?' I scanned it in, mouse-drew over all the sketchy pencil lines on in bright red, then selected and removed everything else and went to work on coloring it.
The background nearly killed me. It's a hell of a lot more complex than it looks, and keep in mind, the program I use was never designed for anything like this. We're talkin' MS-Paint level technology. Still, I freakin' love how it came out in the end.
Hopefully, Gadget-as-Tima will keep away from strange Ziggurats...
