Hande Demirel has a Ph.D. in Geoinformatics from the Technical University Berlin-TUB (Germany). She is Professor at the Istanbul Technical University, Department of Geomatics Engineering. She is giving lectures on Geographic Information Systems, Systems Engineering and Photogrammetry. She was acting as scientific researcher at the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (EC-JRC) during the period of 2011-2014, with particular reference to the study transport impact assessment, spatial analyses and climate change impacts on transportation. Her expertise is on spatial data acquisition, modelling and analysis from both the theoretical and empirical viewpoint.

Land cover and land use modelling provides key information for understanding the environmental pr... more Land cover and land use modelling provides key information for understanding the environmental processes and evaluating the contributory factors leading to the land use changes. Therefore, the possible driving forces of them are required to be revealed thoroughly to give tangible explanations about the nature of land use and land cover change. The study area is Istanbul that is a megacity, which accommodates millions of people, and its population continues to increase as time passes. Due to the fact that population in Istanbul increases, urban areas start to grow rapidly and the number of people who resides in the cities grows as a result. Land management of Istanbul transforms into complex structure. In order to assist decision makers, a land cover/use prediction model of Istanbul was created for quantifying these factors in the model. In this paper, logistic regression was used for predicting land use change and simulating a land use model for the year of 2023. By means of the developed model, quantitative analyses could be incorporated to the decision making process of future city components.

Bu çalışmada, İTÜ Geomatik Mühendisliği Programının kalite güvence sistemi dahilinde değerlendiri... more Bu çalışmada, İTÜ Geomatik Mühendisliği Programının kalite güvence sistemi dahilinde değerlendirilmesi için yararlanılan çıkış mülakat teknikleri ele alınmıştır. Doğrudan bir değerlendirme yöntemi olarak çıkış mülakatı, mezun olan öğrencinin bölümü ile yaptığı görüşme olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu nedenle bu görüşme bazı platformlarda mezuniyet mülakatı olarak ta isimlendirilmektedir. Çıkış mülakatı mezuniyet sonrasında, 35 yeni mezuna uygulanmıştır. Komisyon, Akademik Değerlendirme ve Kalite Geliştirme Komisyonunun da desteği ile hazırladığı anketi mezunlarla yaklaşık 30 dakika süren yüz yüze görüşme ile gerçekleştirmiştir. Mezunlar tarafından sağlanan bu geri beslemenin değeri çok fazladır. Belgelenmiş, analiz edilmiş ve değerlendirilmiş olan bu görüşmelerin sonuçları bu çalışmada genel olarak ele alınmış ve tartışılmıştır.

As the study area, two bridges connecting Europe and Asia and the planned third bridge was selected, where the constructed transportation infrastructures had drastically changed the land-use profile and still have negative impacts on environment. After exploring the interaction systematically and identifying the land cover/use pattern specific for the Istanbul Metropolitan Area, possible alternatives routes for the new bridge were by means of multi-criteria decision making approach and potential prediction of impacts were performed. As with any change concerning the transport sector, uneasiness about the prospect of having to change the way cities are currently organized -in order to cut down on transport-linked nuisances- has generated a great number of questions on the best way to achieve sustainability in urban transport. The European Commission is considering a European support framework for the implementation of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans in EU Member States. Climate impacts in Europe: an integrated economic assessment

ABSTRACT The JRC PESETA II study integrates the consequences of several separate climate change i... more ABSTRACT The JRC PESETA II study integrates the consequences of several separate climate change impacts into a macroeconomic CGE model. This enables comparison of the different impacts based on common metrics (household welfare and economic activity). The study uses a large set of climate model runs (twelve) and impact categories (agriculture, energy demand, river floods, sea-level rise, forest fires, transport infrastructure). The results show that there is a wide dispersion of impacts across EU regions, with strong geographical asymmetries, depending on the specific impact category and climate future. For instance, Northern Central Europe has negative impacts mainly related to sea level rise and river floods while Southern Europe is affected mainly by agriculture. The study also explores the significance of transboundary effects (where climate change causes economic damages outside the region directly affected).

An Assessment on the Impacts of Sea Level Rise in the Çukurova Deltaic Region in Turkey

One of the most serious problems that the coastal zones are facing is the accelerated sea level r... more One of the most serious problems that the coastal zones are facing is the accelerated sea level rise and its resulting physical impacts. Cukurova Delta, the low-lying deltaic region in the southern coast of Turkey, is considered to be the most vulnerable area in the county to the sea level rise. In this study, we assess the impacts of the possible sea level rise from environmental, social and economic aspects in Cukurova Delta. GIS-based inundation mapping on the high resolution elevation model indicates that about 68% of the agricultural areas, 100% of the wetlands, 77% of the settlement zones/beaches/bare lands and 62% of the forestry lands would be at risk of flooding. Nearshore settlements, lagoons and the agricultural lands are the most severely impacted areas due to the inundation.
