D-Day June 6, 1944

Allied armies invaded France in Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944 on the beaches of Normandy. Like all landings against fortified positions this was a bloody day especially on Omaha Beach where US tanks did not make it ashore & the pre-landing bombardment by naval guns and warplanes was ineffective. It took most of the day to firmly secure a foothold there at the cost of many lives. The landings were known as the Longest Day.
