L to R: Co-writer/executive producer/co-star Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, director John Landis. Martin's idea for the movie began in 1980 and he, Dan Aykroyd, and John Belushi were originally going to play the Three Amigos. At one point, Steven Spielberg was slated to direct and he wanted Martin, Bill Murray, and Robin Williams for the cast. Landis was brought in to direct after Spielberg and Aykroyd left the project and wanted Martin, Chase, and John Candy. Candy was too large to ride the horse and recommended Short to replace him. It was the first movie for Short - both he and Steve became close friends and continue to perform together.

Writer/director Damian Chazelle wrote the screenplay for this movie in 2010, when the film industry seemed out of reach for him. His idea was "to take the old musical but ground it in real life where things don't always exactly work out," and to salute creative people who move to Los Angeles to chase their dreams.
