Nutcracker Painting Tutorial | Nutcracker fans I finally have a painting just for you! Here is a step by step nutcracker painting tutorial🎨✨ #tutorials #beginnerfriendly... | By Emily Seilhamer Art | Okay, all you nutcracker fans, this was my number one request this year. So, pick a color for your background. I'm using my mop brush and using light blue and white together and doing up and down strokes in the middle of my canvas. On the outside edges of my canvas, I want to frame my nutcracker. So, dip into a darker shade, I'm using a dark cobalt blue and while the middle still wet, I'm blending it in from the edge. So, the outside edges will be a darker blue and then, it will fade in a lighter blue in the center. Something like that but remember, you can do whatever color you want. Make sure that's dry and then, pick a color for your nutcracker suit. I'm going to do red. So, starting with a size eight-round brush, let's do the shape of his body starting with a horizontal line slightly underneath the middle of your canvas and then, you could just do one long rectangle. I'm going to give his body a little bit more of an hourglass shape. So, half of his body is going to be tilted in a little bit And then where his belt will be, I'm going to have the bottom half of his body, those lines are going to tilt out a little bit. And then connect the bottom with another horizontal line. Notice I left a little space at the bottom for his pants. Once you have his body shape, fill it in with a solid color. Again, I'm using red just as the base. And now for his arms, I'm going to give him some royal sleeves by doing a circle on the top left side of his body. And then underneath the sleeve, I'm going to do two long line coming down for the long part of his arm. You could go straight down but I do have mine tilted in towards his hip a little bit. Fill that in and you can then straighten up the bottom edge like that. Notice I left a little sliver of blue in between the arm and the body. And then do the same thing on the other side just opposite. So do that big royal sleeve and a tilted rectangle down towards his hip. Next let's give him a head. So I'm going to use some tan with white to make a skin tone. You could even add a little bit of red. With your round brush do a line on top of his body in between his sleeves. For the sides of his head, I'm going to do two curved lines going up but don't make it too tall because you want to have room for his hat. I'm going to connect the top with a straight line and then fill the head in. Once you have the whole thing a solid color, you could also add some shading around the outside edge with a darker shade of your skin tone but make sure the front of his face is brighter so his facial features will really pop. For his hand I'm going to take the same color I did for his face and do two circles on the bottom of each of my sleeves as well now we don't want a floating nutcracker do we? So let's give him some pants. Wherever your body left off fill in anything underneath that all the way to the bottom of the canvas with a rectangle. I'm going to do just black. While we have the black let's also do a little bit of shading on arms and his sleeve to give him a little bit more definition. So I'm taking some a red from his shirt with some black and outlining the inside edge of his arms and the underneath side of those circles. Really blend it in. It does not have to be super dark but it does give a little bit more definition between his body and his arms now. You see how that really makes him look three dimensional? While we have the black, let's also give him a belt. Now, you could just do a straight line for a belt. Notice I'm going to have mine tilting in from the sides, almost like a triangle but it flatten out in the middle. Like an elongated hourglass shape. It's up to you whatever style you give him. But I'm going to do that and fill it in with black to start. There we go. What else I want to be black is his hat. So for the top of his head I'm going to do a long curved U shape overlapping the top of his head. His hat's going to tilt out on the sides a little bit. So notice each side is tilting to the right and then over here on the left. And then for top of the hat just do one long curve that curves upward connecting both sides. There we go. And then fill it in with a solid coat of black as well. Notice the whole thing we're just doing mostly solid colors to start so we can add details over top of it. Now let's start on his face. The first thing we have to do is make him a nutcracker by painting the hole where the nut goes in to get cracked. That's just going to be a small rectangle like this. That's on the bottom middle part of his head and it overlaps his shirt just a little bit. For his eyes, we're also going to do black lines for just the top crease of his eye. Now, be very careful which way you tilt these lines because if you tilt them inward, he's going to look like an angry nutcracker and if you do them too straight, he's going to look very meh which is kind of the personality of a nutcracker. See how they're tilted up in the middle just a little bit? That's what I was going for. Now, for the white part of his eyes, I'm going to take a small round brush and do a U shape underneath each of those black lines. Notice how the black line is a little bit longer on each side of the white part. Here's going to do the U shape and fill it in a solid white color. Now he also needs a nose and you could do whatever style nose you want but I'm going to give him a big pointy nose by doing a small V on the top middle of his mouth and then turning that into a long diamond shape like this. Fill that in with the dark shade and then on either side of the diamond, I'm going to blend in a little bit of white. Leaving a little bit of shading on the outside edges and even a little bit on the middle. Just like that. With a small round brush again, I'm also going to give him some pupils. So, just do a smaller U shape underneath that black line leaving white all the way around the outside edge and fill each of those in. Oh, look. Now, he's looking at us. Let's give him even more personality now by picking an eye color. I did blue to match my background and just do a curve around the pupil with the color you pick. You can even take a little bit of white to make it look less flat and blend that in two with a couple streaks. So let's do blue around this pupil over here. There we go and then some white as well. While you have the white you can also make him look like he has sparkle in his eyes by doing two dots. One in each pupil. You know he needs some rosy cheeks. So take some white with a tiny bit of red in it and smudge a little circle underneath his eye and beside his nose. If it gets too bright, you can blend it in with some of your skin tone especially along those edges. Do the same thing on the other side. Gonna speed this up a little bit. Wow. Now, he's really starting to look like a nutcracker but he has a baby face. So, you know what we need? We need to give him a mustache. So, I'm going to take some black paint with my small round brush again and let's do a mustache that goes around his rosy cheek. On the side of this bottom part of his nose I'm going to do a line and then do a curve like this. So it's a triangle coming out from his nose pointed down towards the bottom of his rosy cheek and do a pointed curve that goes around the outside of his rosy cheek pointing up to his eye. Now you could do whatever style mustache you want to. You could also not have a mustache at all. I've seen some people even take white and do big bushy mustaches like some gnomes have. Make it your own and decide what personality to give him. No matter what nutcracker it is though, you need to have teeth. So, to make sure they're lined up right, give him two big front teeth that are centered on the middle part of his nose like that and then on either side, make sure you do tiny rectangles going all the way out to the outside edge, making them as uniform as possible. Trust process with this. This kind of give me that weird feeling like have you ever had that dream where your teeth are falling out? It was really weird to paint these teeth. But trust the process and this is what makes it really look like a nutcracker. Once you have the top row of teeth also mirror that on the bottom. Notice I'm leaving a gap between the top row and the bottom row with the black. Now I don't want to make him look too human which I guess it depends which part of the story you're at but I did decide to give him some gums. So, taking some of the pink from his rosy cheeks, I'm going to outline the top of his teeth with this color also bringing some of the pink in between each. Same thing on the bottom bringing that pink up into the middle of each tooth and then you can take some black and straighten your teeth. You really want them to look like rectangles that are completely separate. Right now, they look too human, too uncanny. We're going to turn them into a nutcracker. Very go. Now he looks like he could crack a nut but we want to make sure that his mouth can open wide enough. So add those lines on either side of his mouth going down into his chest. Now that's a basic nutcracker shape. Let's give him some decoration. I'm going to start with a dark yellow but then I'm going to add some metallic gold paint as well. I decided to do a gold rim for his hat and then different patterns and decorations. Do some research on different nutcrackers. There's so many different Styles. I like these petal looking shapes coming off from the top of his hat so I'm going to do three of those. It also helps to add a little bit of white in with your yellow especially if you're using bright yellow to make it really pop. I did that there. See how that covered a little bit more. This is just going to be the under painting of my design. I'm also going to do a dot or a circle on top of my hat. Some people like to do little patterns of dots that look like gold chains as well. I'm going to do a few of those on the hat. I'm going to give him a gold collar on either side of his mouth. And let's do a gold belt buckle in the middle of his belt like that. Do whatever pattern you want for his jacket. I'm going to do some gold stripes that are pointed outwards from the corners of the belt buckle up to his collar and then down to his pants. Notice it's almost in an X shape like that. Leaving some in the middle. I might add a color there. Many many nutcrackers have buttons so I'm going to add three buttons on either side of his shirt as well. I think he even needs some shoulder pads. I've seen people do like frills coming down. I'm going to do points and then fill it in pretty simple. You can even do a gold chain going from the middle point to his collar to tie in the little chains that are on his hat. Love it. Let's fix up the bottom of his sleeve. I'm going to do one where the hand meets the shirt and then another one above it a little bit. And then do the same thing to the other arm. I actually really like this brighter yellow. You don't have to add gold on top of the design like I'm going to. You also don't have to do just one color on his shirt either. Let's add some green in between these stripes. That makes it look a little bit more like Christmas but I've seen Nutcracker in all sorts of colors so you could have a multi-colored jacket as well. That's up to you. Really make it your own. What I love about this painting is there's so many ways you can personalize it as long as you have the basic shape of the nutcracker. Now he's looking dapper. Alright. Don't forget to clean up any black lines where the yellow might have gotten into like his belt and his shirt. Now let's try the metallic gold. The metallic paints are usually a little bit thinner which is why I wanted to do the yellow under painting first. I'm just going to do a thin coat over top of my entire design. Like I mentioned I really like the bright yellow. It's a shame you can't see the shine of the gold in this camera because it looks really dull right now but I'm looking at it from the light, it is so shimmery and so pretty. I did my entire design. Let me show you. Oh, look there you can kind of see it a little bit in the camera. It really, really shimmers. I love metallic paint but because it does look so flat, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take some of the yellow and white I had before and just add a couple simple highlights. As a final step, I'm going to add some hair. Taking a small round brush, let's do some little tiny lines coming down from the bottom of his mouth for a goatee. Try to stick inside those lines that come down to help his mouth open and it comes down to a point a little bit. I'm also going to take the white and do an Einstein type hairstyle coming out from the sides of his head. Little tiny squiggly lines going in all different directions. You can even bring it down to the shoulder pads. It's okay if it overlaps over top of those and notice how I have the hair coming out to a point a little bit in the middle. Then something like that. He aged about 30 years now. Let's give him some old man eyebrows by tapping on some white above both of his eyes. I left my background plain but so many of you had so many different suggestions. The top suggestion was snowflakes or stars. As always, you decide what's in your painting. Have fun and happy painting everybody. I can't wait to see how these turn out and if you like this tutorial, follow me for more.
