"The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner" Pre-Reading, Guided Reading, and Questions
My juniors begin by reading The Great Gatsby. Although both Nick and Gatsby served in World War I, little of my classroom discussion has focused on the effects of war on the characters. In particular, I wanted to have a discussion about the absence of the war in the novel. To facilitate that conversation, we read “The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner” by Randall Jarrell. I chose this poem because it does not shy away from the brutality of war and the characteristics of Modernism.
"The Yellow Wallpaper" Reading Questions, Writing Prompts, and Lit Crit Activity
"The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a classic piece of American literature. This text is a great opportunity for analyzing point of view, symbolism, and characterization. Similarly, Gilman's masterful text helps readers engage literary criticism and explore the relationship between power and privilege. To help students close read this text, I've included side-by-side text and questions, 16 writing prompts (and a rubric!), and a literary criticism tool.
