While these days we don't think twice about ordering all kinds of things online, with giants like Amazon offering pretty much anything you could possibly imagine shipped to your doorstep, the mail-order concept goes back much further than you might think, and you could even get an entire house delivered by mail.

This living room was illustrated in a Ladies Home Journal during the period of Armstrong's association with  Frank Alvah Parsons or more likely his atelier, the students of which may have produced these pieces. Notice the portière draperies between the dining and living rooms that would have kept the heat from the fireplace in the living room where shivering humans could enjoy it. It's easy to imagine this as the living room of the 1922 Lewis Piping Rock house plan. My new obsession led me from Pasadena to Carmel, to check out two self-designed homes of Charles Greene, 1/2 of Greene & Greene. These brothers perfected American craftsman architecture in the early 1900s, with their “ultimate bungalows” like the Gamble House & Blacker House. 

Charles’s Pasadena abode (nicknamed “Oakholm”) is in a historic district that contains 7 Greene & Greene homes – that doesn’t even count the Gamble House, just a block away. He built it in 1901, as a compact little thing, with two semi-octagons bulging from the living room & dining room, and a full octagon lifted up, turret-like, for a partial second story.
