DIY Home Garden on Instagram: "Here's how to harvest herbs and get MORE from your plants. Basically, it all boils down to understanding how that particular herb develops new growth. In the case of basil, it tends to have a main stem that produces side shoots that help the plant bush out. By harvesting just above those side shoots, you'll encourage more bushy growth. Harvest BELOW and you have a weird dying stick floating at the top of your basil. For plants like chives or green onions, the lawnmower technique works well. Amy Powers on Instagram: "The topic of pruning suckers off tomatoes is controversial. Like most problems the answer isn’t yes or no: it depends on what type of tomato you are growing. There are determinant tomatoes, which are more bushy and they give you one main harvest for several weeks then the plant is pretty much done for the rest of the season. Since you want to maximize your yield from the harvest, keep all of your suckers, except any that grow on the bottom, 4 inches of the main stem. Any fruit that gets created from suckers this low on the plant are going to droop down and touch the soil and that’s how your tomatoes get diseases. So only prune suckers from determinate tomatoes that are growing on the bottom 4 inches of the plant. Indeterminate tomatoes can become an overgrown m

Cinnamon naturally contains eugenol, an aromatic compound commonly found in traditional insect repellants. Here are three great uses for cinnamon this summer. 🦟Cinnamon Spray To keep the mosquitoes away, make my magic bug spray. INGREDIENTS: 2 teaspoons of cinnamon 4 cups of warm water a couple of drops of rubbing alcohol a couple of drops of dish soap INSTRUCTIONS: Mix cinnamon into the water and set it out for at least a few hours to steep — as if you were making tea.
