Fionnuala Doherty : My Muses

As an artist I try to spend as much time as possible drawing/sketching ideas for final pieces. I received a BA in Fine Art in 2011 at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. My drawings and paintings stem from an interest I've had in forgery, imitation, fiction and the archive. My university thesis looked at forgery in an historical context and how it sits within the archival practice of contemporary artists like Walid Raad.

Former home of the danseuse étoile Sylvie Guillem, the Opéra National de Paris is a must for any music/dance lover. Musée de la Contrefacon is a museum dedicated to the art of counterfeiting. Nothing is sacred to the manufacturers of ersatz from banknotes, liqueurs, designer clothing and even Barbie and Ken dolls. It's located on 16 Rue de la Faisanderie, 75116 Paris. Metro Porte Dauphine.
My favourite place for continental food shopping is La Grande Epicerie du Bon Marché, 38 Rue de Sevres 75007.
I try to pass by the Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir 75012 when walking between the 13th and 12th districts. Nearby you'll also find the four glass towers of the €2 billion Bibliotheque National de France which was designed by Dominique Perrault.
Arenes de Lutèce A perfect way to pass an afternoon if you're strolling through the 5th arrondissement. This 2nd century Roman amphitheatre once sat 10,000 people for gladiatorial combats and other events. Found by accident in 1869 when rue Monge was under construction, it’s now used by neighbourhood youths for playing football and of course la pétanque.
Ultimate stress reliever : Bargue drawings!
The experience at Paris Muse has been a great one. It's great being able to see works like 'Virgin on the Rocks' in the flesh, but there's also a wonderful sense of discovery in a museum like the Louvre. Everyone responds to works differently ; and this allows each tour to be fresh and different.
Studio of Rembrandt van Rijn, Dutch, 1606-1669 Portrait of a Lady Holding a Glove, 1632-1633 Oil on canvas 72 x 62 cm I have fond memories of flicking through through the correspondence letters (NGI archive) relating to this work!

Johannes Vermeer, The Art of Painting, (1666-68) Oil on Canvas, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The Art of Painting holds a special place within Vermeer's oeuvre. It shows all the wonderful characteristics of his painting technique : the Dutch interior lit softly and a frozen moment captured in photographic realism.
Dr. Fadl Fakhouri/The Atlas Group, 57 Notebook Volume 72, plate 29 (1996-2002), (1999) Inkjet Print, Anthony Reynolds Gallery, Presented as individual pages, the notebook of Fadl Fakhouri is framed within the context of a found document which recalls the eccentric betting system once practiced by fellow academics. Rather than wager on the outcomes of the race they bet on the photographer’s ability to capture the winning horse exactly as it crossed the finishing line.
