The study adopted the descriptive survey research design with a sampling frame of 36 secondary schools, 36 principals and 72 teacher counsellors. In addition, the study employed questionnaires as a means of data collection and the results were analysed using SPSS version 22. The study used descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations and frequencies) in data analysis. The study found that very few teacher counsellors had been fully trained on the interpersonal skills necessary to undertake guidance and counselling within secondary schools. This was bound to negatively affect the implementation of guidance and counselling services in the schools. Therefore, it was recommended that the Ministry of Education and the Teachers’ Service Commission develop clear policy g...

Unless teachers improve their ability to use existing technology, they will encounter various difficulties. One of the most notable of these difficulties is that they cannot respond to the expectations of their students. Research has shown that the self-confidence of teachers affects their use of technology in instruction. The study assessed the confidence of tutors in primary teacher training colleges regarding the integration of ICT in the teaching and learning practice in Kenya. There are a number of ICT projects that are equipping Kenyan institutions of learning with computers and establishing internet connectivity. But the body of literature on studies among tutors is so scanty, leaving a noticeable gap in the literature about tutors’ level of ICT integration in instruction. The study sought to establish the relationship betwee...

In Kenya, whereas households meet a negligible cost to cater for Free Primary Education, it is not clearly established how much they pay for Free Secondary Education. Thus cost is a key barrier to transition to secondary school especially for the poor. The objective of the study was to establish the effect of the hidden costs on students’ completion rates in public boarding schools in Kisii County. This study was based on Classical Liberal Theory of Equal opportunities advanced by Sherman and Wood (1982) which expresses the view that each child possesses inborn talents which accelerate them to social promotion hence all systems should be designed without any barriers. The study used correlational research design. The target population was 60 head teachers from 60 public boarding secondary schools in Kisii County, 641 class teachers and 240 PTA class representatives. Krejcie and Morgan’s (1970) scie...

The evidence in literature reveals positive effects of information and communication technology in instruction. But teachers have a challenging task in integrating the tools of ICT in teaching especially those teacher educators not quite exposed to technology. This is because so many factors influence ICT integration. In this paper, we explore the the relationship between teacher-educators’ age, gender, level of education, and teaching experience and the integration level of ICTs in teaching in primary teacher training colleges in Kenya. The simple random sampling technique was used to select six teacher training colleges in Kenya and 169 respondents who participated in the study. Data was collected using a questionnaire, an interview schedule and an observation schedule. The data collected w...

This is because Education is an instrument for changing attitudes and relationships, as well as preparing children for those changes required in a productive organization. Recent trends in educational development include the introduction of studies within the school curriculum that could help students to be all-rounded and responsible citizens. The study of conflict and conflict resolution is one such move. Based on a study conducted in Kosirai Division of Nandi North District in Kenya, this paper examines the instructional methods used by Social Studies teachers when teaching Conflict and Conflict Resolution in their schools. The study was carried out through descriptive survey. The study population included Social Studies teachers in Kosirai Division of Nandi North District. From this population, a sample of 45 standard seven Social Studiesteachers was drawn using pur...

However, difficulty in learning the skills has made it unpopular among students and teachers in secondary schools. Kenya certificate of secondary Educaton (KCSE) candidates continue to perform poorly in the Oral skills section of the English paper. This raises questions on their level of communicative competence in a language that is very important in their academic pursuits. It is evident from research that this is due to the traditional methods of teaching commonly used by teachers of English. But this should not be the case considering the central role played by oral skills in the language curriculum. One responsive approach that has been lauded to enhance the development of oral skills is dramatization. Research on the use of dramatization in teaching English in various countries supports its usefulness in improving students’ achievement in language learning. This s...

The study examined the frequency of use of ICT equipment by secondary school heads and teachers in Nandi and Uasin Gishu counties, Kenya. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. All the 8 districts of Nandi and Uasin Gishu Counties were included in the study. A total of 63 schools with functional ICTs were purposively selected and, in each school, one class teacher, 2 subject teachers and 2 heads of department were selected using stratified random sampling to give a total of 315 teachers. All head teachers from each of the 63 schools were selected through purposive sampling. The total sample of the study was, therefore, 378 respondents. Triangulation approach was employed in which both qualitative and quantitative dat...

Scholars agree that Kiswahili language and literature would be incomplete without proverbs because they contain wisdom and advice concerning life. Proverbs form an integral part of the language and therefore the need to integrate them in learning. Kiswahili proverbs are taught mostly by explaining the meaning of each of the words making up the proverb. As a result, the performance of students in Kiswahili in KCSE in Kenya is wanting. Technology is a catalyst of new pedagogical change and thus, teachers have a duty to use it in different learning environments. This study intends to find out the effect of video mediated instruction on students’ motivation, attitude and achievement in learning Kiswahili proverbs in secondary schools in Nakuru County, Kenya. The study will be guided by the constructivist learning theory. It will employ Quasi-Experimental research design involving Solomon Four No...

It adopted a descriptive cross-sectional survey design. Purposive sampling was utilized to obtain a sample of 8 teachers in charge of Academic Affairs in 4 private schools. The interview schedule was the main data collection instrument. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. The study found out that the ban on privately offered holiday tuition did not negatively affect academic performance in the private primary schools. It was further established that schools have found new strategies to make up for the ban on tuition and had inbuilt tuition into extra hours within the week and on Saturdays. However all the respondents agreed that the schools had complied with the directive on holiday tuition given by the Ministry of Education. The study further found out that majority of the teachers did not support the ban due to slow coverage of the syllabus. The paper...

Modelling appropriate uses of these resources by teacher-educators in the pre-service classroom can give future teachers the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively integrate these tools in their classrooms. Research indicates that there has been considerable progress in this area in many teacher education institutions in developed countries. However, the status of the . integration of ICTs by teacher educators in Kenyan primary teacher training colleges is largely unknown. This study, thus, sought to determine the factors influencing the level to which teacher educators in public primary teacher training colleges have integrated ICT in teacher preparation. The study was guided the Diffusion of Innovations theory which addresses change levels that educators progress through in technology integration. The simple random sampling technique ...
