I am interested in early modern history, particularly the history of the English Revolution, and especially concerned with religion, politics, print culture and gender. My last book was Gender and the English Revolution (Routledge, 2011). I am currently working on preaching in the 1640s and 1650s, and on ways in which the official recording initiatives of the state in the 1640s and 1650s prompted particular forms of community and individual memorialising of civil war conflicts.

one of the Scottish representatives to the Westminster Assembly was rarely impressed by the relig... more one of the Scottish representatives to the Westminster Assembly was rarely impressed by the religious practices he found in 1640s London, but he was nonetheless struck by the enthusiasm of the English for taking notes at sermons: 'the most of all the Assemblie wrytes, as almost all the people, men, women and children wryte at preaching', he declared in January 1644. This was presumably an exaggeration of the literacy standards of Londoners as well as of their zeal for sermons although Baillie's testimony can be supported from other sources. 1

This paper explores the development of Winstanley's ideas in terms of the context of place. Altho... more This paper explores the development of Winstanley's ideas in terms of the context of place. Although the influence on Winstanley of his early experiences in Wigan and London is difficult to determine, in Surrey we can see a clear connection between locality and the shaping of his ideas. Winstanley moved to the Surrey parish of Cobham in late 1643, and his observations and experiences of tensions and conflicts within the local community there can be seen to have fed directly into his Digger program of 1649 -1650. This program drew on local traditions of social conflict, but it would seem that Winstanley departed significantly from these traditions in his outright hostility to custom and in his adoption of Norman Yoke theories. Custom had long been invoked in conflicts between tenants and lords of manors, and was a crucial weapon in the defense of popular rights, but for Winstanley it always formed part of the armory of the oppressor. His rejection of custom did not, however, prevent him from gaining significant support for the Digger venture from among local inhabitants.

William Summer of Over township had been forced to provide free-quarter to 'Yorkshire souldiers under the Comand of Major George being 72 men and soe many horses one night when the seige was drawne off, by reason of prince Ruperts cominge to Beeston Castle anno domini 1645'. The horses had 'eaten and destroyed' four loads of hay worth 'as I conceave' £2, while their riders had cost him £2 in 'meate, strong drinke, white bread, and cheese'; in all Summer estimated this involuntary hospitality at £5. On another occasion two soldiers with their horses had cost Summer 4s., besides 5s. 'in strong drink for themselves and others which would have payd but he would not suffer them'. The social conventions of drink during a civil war were ambiguous: quartering two Cheshire men had cost Summer another 5s. for 'strong drinke in an extraordinary way by the said souldiers which would neither pay not suffer others to pay'. 1 Being a constable in a parish subject to exactions from both sides was probably worse than being an innkeeper with ample space for quartering. Lott Keyte of Great Wolford, Warwickshire, described his personal losses at length in a statement that began by using 'he saith', as in a legal deposition, but evolved into a straightforward first person narrative: 'he saith that upon the Lord Brooke his request a horse and furniture . . . did in the whole amount to' £6. 5s. But about August 1643 one Hastings Ingram then taking up arms for the parliament I did furnish him with four souldiers whereof one was my eldest sonne which soldiers did stand out in his house with him in their defence against part of the kings army till he was forced to yeald and they to fly the house being fired over their heads I did relieve them . . . to the value of £1. ? This chapter demonstrates how the links between proper manliness and political legitimacy were ch... more This chapter demonstrates how the links between proper manliness and political legitimacy were challenged and debated during a bitter civil war and Revolution. Male political identities were contested at all levels, from attacks on the inadequate masculinity of King Charles I, to rival claims for political agency on the part of humbler men, that rejected or transformed previous commonplaces about the relationship between household headship and political power. Debates centred on the unmanliness of political rivals, often focusing on their inability to control ‘their’ women, a compelling argument during a period when women were very active in religious and political struggles. The English Revolution prompted intimate, personal divisions as well as formal political differences, and unsettled the gendered contrast between private and public worlds.

ABSTRACTStudies of preaching in England during the 1640s and 1650 have focused on the high-profil... more ABSTRACTStudies of preaching in England during the 1640s and 1650 have focused on the high-profile sermons, preached before the parliament on fast days and other special days of thanksgiving, relying in particular on analysis of preachers’ texts as published in print. This paper explores ways of placing the fast sermons in broader contexts, drawing on the lively scholarship on early modern sermons that presents them as events as well as texts, dynamic encounters between preachers and hearers. This paper thus explores the responses of conscientious hearers to sermons in London in the 1640s and 1650s, through a variety of notes kept by pious Puritans, broadly sympathetic to the parliament's cause, including the artisan Nehemiah Wallington, John and Katherine Gell from the provincial gentry and John Harper, a city fishmonger. First, As a Wife; She was singular, and very Exemplary, in that reverence and obedience which she yielded to her Husband, both in Words and Deeds.' Thus the ejected minister and biographer Samuel Clarke eulogised his wife of fifty years in the life he published after her death. This typical if problematic source for a Puritan woman introduces some of the themes of this chapter. Puritan divinity had implications for all aspects of human life; Puritans were exhorted to demonstrate their faith through the daily performance of 'relative duties' within their households as well as through pious activities more narrowly defined. For women, the duties of a wife took priority; the implications that followed, and the ways in which women found meaning and influence within Puritan families and networks are a central concern of this chapter. But the hierarchies of gender are part of the fundamental ordering of societies, so we need to consider what Puritanism contributed to the expectations and possibilities for the proper roles and behaviour of women and men. Moreover, gendered language provided a profoundly influential set of symbols and metaphors through which people understood contrast and division (in this context particularly the contrast between the true and false church) and relationships of power and authority (such as the relationship between Christ and the church).

Abstract This article analyses the complications arising from the sale of the property of the dea... more Abstract This article analyses the complications arising from the sale of the property of the dean and chapter of Lichfield after the English Civil War in so far as they involved the Gells of Hopton in Derbyshire, long-standing tenants and collectors for the chapter. It argues that political and administrative change challenged pre-existing social hierarchies as officials gained authority from their relationship to a newly powerful state, and from ideological commitment to parliamentary regimes, and shows how Civil War divisions interacted in complex fashion with tense pre-existing relationships. The power of the Gells was somewhat eclipsed, although their energetic defence of their interests enabled them to survive the strains of the Interregnum and the resurgence of the Episcopal church at the Restoration.
