This grilled meatloaf recipe is cooked on a wood plank and is so easy to make. Grill enthusiasts of any skill level can make this one!
Grilled Meatloaf
Personally I feel like grilled meatloaf is the most under-rated food of all time. Some people love it, some people don’t. Honestly, I happen to love it!
The downside of meatloaf is it’s a bit hard to photograph. It’s just one of those foods that does not blow people’s minds when they see the photo.
I say don’t judge a book by its cover. Or a meatloaf by its photo for that matter. Brown food is just a bit hard to make “pretty” sometimes.
That said, this is one of my favourite easy recipes of all time. My Mom used to make meatloaf all the time and I always get crazy nostalgic when I make it.
What I really dig about grilled meatloaf is how versatile it is. I mean, you can stuff it with cheese, wrap it bacon, shove jalapeno peppers or garlic into it. The possibilities are freaking endless.
Another thing I totally love about it is you can make kick ass sandwiches with it the next day. Nothing beats meatloaf sandwiches. They are life changing!
For this recipe, I used wood planks to cook the meatloaf. Make sure you soak your wood planks in water before using them.
Now, run outside and fire up that grill immediately. Then, use the leftover to make my Mini Meatloaf Sandwiches with Red Pepper Pesto. You’re welcome!

Grilled Planked Meatloaf
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1/2 cup salad dressing
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 medium vidalia onion diced
- 1 cup Italian bread crumbs
- 1 dash salt
- 1 dash pepper
- 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
Instructions
- Soak a plank of wood in water for at least an hour. Trust me, if you don't soak long enough you'll run into trouble.
- In a large bowl mix together the ground beef, salad dressing, egg, worcestershire sauce, vidalia onion, bread crumbs, salt and pepper. Just mix long enough for it to come together. Never over-mix meatloaf or burgers. Trust me.
- Shape the meat into two loaves. I do the shaping right on the planks. It just makes it so much easier.
- Place on a medium heat grill, right on the grate. Close the lid and allow to cook for about 30 minutes.
- Lift the lid and brush the barbecue sauce all over the meatloaves. Put the lid back down and cook for about 15 to 20 more minutes.
- Remove from the grill and allow to rest for about 10 to 15 minutes. Slice it up.
- Serve with a big meatloaf loving smile!

I’ve never done a meatloaf on a plank before! Nor on the grill for that matter. What have I been waiting for! This looks absolutely delicious.
You must try it Lana. It’s a super easy way to cook it and keep it moist. Plus you get to make sandwiches out of the leftovers which is a huge perk.
Meatloaf on a grilling plank – what an excellent idea!
Thanks Ginny. I love meatloaf so it was necessary to come up with ways to eat it year round. I refuse to turn my oven on during summer months.
that looks delicious
Thank you so much.
I’ve never grilled a meatloaf on a plank or in a grill, love this and it looks fabulous!
It’s so easy and so yummy. A must try.
Is it bad that I want a slice now for breakfast! Wow! Love this idea, Kim!!
Ha, I think that seems totally normal. But I drink pepsi for breakfast so I’m not the best judge. lol
I’ve been waiting for this ever since you mentioned it on facebook. LOVE the idea of grilling a meatloaf!
Thanks Lauren. I love me some meatloaf. I know some people think it’s boring but I say only if the person making it is boring. But then I’m rude like that. Ha.
I’m shaking my head in agreement. I have made so many awesome meatloaves for my blog that have never made it because I can’t get them to look beautiful. I mean, I have to love a good meatloaf, it’s what I had to cook for Gordon Ramsay when we met!
It’s like the Queen Bee of ugly foods, yet it’s so darn good.
What? Gordon Ramsey, how freaking cool is that.
Planked meatloaf…well I never would have thought! Yum!
I am all about being weird and unique. Ha.
What a fantastic idea!!! I was just trying to figure out how to make a meatloaf on the grill without it turning into a giant hamburger. This is it!!!
Lol, that made me laugh. It really could turn into a giant hamburger if you’re not careful. I do them on planks and I often just use my casserole pans and loaf pans on there. I never worry about my dishes getting wrecked, they wash up beautifully. I use cookie sheets on there regularly.
I just did meatloaf on a hickory plank a couple of weeks ago as well as chicken legs 2 ways – your looks absolutely perfect! Planks just are not for salmon! Cheers to THAT!
Exactly. I use them for everything. Even baking. No rules in this dojo. Rock the grill, it’s not just for burgers any more.
Just took meatloaf up a few notches with this recipe! I did this for the family over some kingsford and used sweet baby rays sauce. Some of my crew went straight to sandwiches with this. Easy to make. Easier to cook. Next time I’m throwing in some sweet peppers!
Can I make this on a campfire?
Absolutely! Just use a meat thermometer to ensure the meat is cooked. Just pull it off when it’s between 155-160 degree F internal temp. If you have any other questions let me know.
