Whenever you have an area of your painting subject that is full of tiny complicated details, you’d be surprised how much you can express by simplifying the details into larger areas of light & shadow. - #painting #art #paintingtutorial #artist #oilpainting #howtopaint #paintingtechniques #paintingtips | Daphne Frizzle

19K views · 1.9K reactions | The Perfect Brush Bath. 👨🏽‍🎨🛁🖌️ I get asked all the time: “What do you do with your brushes after painting?” I keep it simple—I leave them in a brush bath with the same linseed oil I use for painting. Could you clean them thoroughly and let them sit dry after every session? Sure. But in my experience, that leads to faster wear and tear on the bristles. Plus, if you’re painting daily, it’s an unnecessary hassle. Another huge benefit of the brush bath? The same oil can be used as your painting medium. Can you soak brushes in walnut oil? Sure… But then you’d need to clean them before painting to avoid getting walnut oil in your work, slowing the drying process significantly and potentially causing issues with paint adherence. Simplicity wins for me. There may be fancier ways to store brushes in a bath, but this method has been the most reliable, effective, and effortless for me. 🎨 Want to paint portraits in paradise? (link in bio) Here’s my list of recommended oil painting supplies: A CMY primary palette: titanium white, burnt umber, quinacridone magenta pr122, phthalo blue pb15, and azo yellow medium py75. You can mix a black using blue and brown. Or a split-primary palette: all of the above, naphthol scarlet pr188 or cadmium red medium, Hansa yellow light py3 or cadmium lemon, and ultramarine blue pb29. You can either use special water soluble oils, choose to go solvent free, or you’ll need a slow evaporating mineral spirit like gamsol or lavender spike oil. You’ll want a sealable brush cleaning tank or jar with diy agitator to keep the solvent in. You’ll need an oil medium to create and control flow, id recommend Liquin or linseed oil and extra containers, or jars to keep it (and other mediums to extra paints) in. I use a silicone cupcake mold as it’s easy to clean. You’ll need paper towels or t-shirt rags to wipe brushes and a fire safe metal safety can lot throw them out carefully. You’ll need a range of synthetic or hog hair brushes from size 1 to 8 and a wide paddle brush for varnishing. If you’re a detail painter you may also want some below zero as well as a smooshy brush for blending. You’ll also want an oil painting varnish like gamvar to protect your work and a midtone grey disposable or glass palette. You can use any piece of glass like a chopping board or picture frame. You’ll need palette knives to mix paint and a razor scraper to clean the palette. You’ll need paper, canvas, wood panel or even a metal surface like aluminum or copper to paint on and a good quality acrylic gesso if these surfaces are unprimed. You’ll also need an easel - my recommendation is an H-frame. Vine Charcoal is also important for the underdrawing. #oilpainting #artisttools #paintingmaterials #oilpaint #brushes #paintingmediums #artstudio | Doris🌹
6.2K views · 528 reactions | More in caption 👇 Despite the fact that a glaze & wash are both techniques where you thin (dilute) oil paint, they are actually very different & if you use them interchangeably you could end up with cracking in the future. That is because oil paintings need to follow the fat over lean rule to prevent cracking. This means that each layer of your painting needs to contain more, not less oil than the layer before so that each layer is more flexible & won’t crack. This is what distinguishes a glaze and a wash; 💦 a WASH is where you add solvent to your oil paint (usually a mineral spirit) to break down the oil & thin the paint. This makes the paint more lean and therefore is only for the first layer of your painting to create a toned ground or a thin underpainting. The solvent will evaporate out if the paint. ✨ a GLAZE is when you add to the oil in your paint & thin the paint by making it fatter. This means that it is best for the last layer of your painting to create a thin translucent layer. I have a full video on glazing on my YouTube. 9.1K views · 1K reactions | Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Sometimes I think that getting the correct value is even more important than getting the correct color in a painting. I always do a value study in black and white to judge my compositions. When painting, it can be frustrating to capture all of the subtle value changes that you see in your set-up. Just remember that it is impossible to replicate in paint all the infinite variety of values in nature. Establish your darkest black and your lightest white, and adjust everything in between as best as you can. Save the lightest whites for the highlights. In the shadows, be sure to keep the values very close together, so that details disappear when you squint. I always like to have the full range of values represented in each painting for maximum drama and interest. To paint small changes in value, wait to closer to the end of a painting when you have all of the larger areas in place. | Linda Mann
1.7K views · 372 reactions | To lower chroma (hue saturation), I use a neutral gray of the same value as opposed to adding the complement. Here’s why: -adding the hue’s (color’s) complement can cause hue shifts in the direction of the complement, especially if you add a significant amount of the complement (such as in the video) -adding a complement can effect value unless the complement is the same value Adding a neutral gray of the same value will give you a more predictable result with the correct value and stay within the same hue family. I typically paint in color strings so I can quickly and accurately adjust chroma while maintaining value.
