Large intestine, posterior section of the intestine, consisting typically of four regions: the cecum, colon, rectum, and anus. The term colon is sometimes used to refer to the entire large intestine. The large intestine is wider and shorter than the small intestine and has a smooth inner wall.

The large intestine is also known as the large bowel, It is the last part of the gastrointestinal tract and of the digestive system in tetrapods, It is the portion of the digestive system most responsible for absorption of water from the indigestible residue of food.

The chemical digestion also occurs on the small intestine. The small intestine is made up of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum; these parts are essential for two main roles which is the breaking down of macromolecules and absorption of water and nutrients. According to (Guerra A. et al., 2012) Pancreatic enzymes and other digestive enzymes produced by the inner wall of the small intestine act together in the breakdown of food constituents.

Waste products from the digestive process include undigested parts of food, fluid, and older cells from the lining of your GI tract. The large intestine absorbs water and changes the waste from liquid into stool. Peristalsis helps move the stool into your rectum.The rectum, is the lower end of your large intestine, it stores the stools until it is pushed out of your anus during a bowel movement.
