Sarah Catherine Gromek on Instagram: "I get asked a lot about the borax wash on my pieces. A borax wash is a liquid solution made by mixing borax (sodium borate) with water, which is then applied to bisqued ceramic pieces. When fired in a kiln the borax melts creating small “glass” speckles. The wash is usually applied on pieces that the artist intends to not glaze. Many artists use the wash over terra sigillata, underglaze, or bare clay to get a “weathered” or stained effect. I hope this explains this process better and encourages more artists to try it and experiment! Note: the brush I am using is a hake brush! This is great if you prefer a guide when carving, painting or for Mishima techniques.
