Chateau de Fontainbleu is 55 kilometers from Paris. During the Age of Enlightenment, hunting parties continued to be held at Fontainebleau during the autumn. The French kings made the most of the fact that etiquette here was a little more relaxed than at Versailles, coming here to receive visiting diplomats from foreign rulers or even, before marriage, taking advantage of a trip to Fontainebleau to meet visiting princesses.

Writing table (Bureau plat), 1759; Gilles Joubert; Paris, France. lacquered oak, gilt-bronze mounts, lined with modern leather. Lacquered in brilliant crimson and with pseudo-Asian landscape scenes in gold for the king’s use in the Cabinet Intérieur. The surface decoration imitates red and gold Chinese lacquer, which was fashionable in France as veneer for furniture in the middle of the eighteenth century.

Indo-Portuguese 18C Contador

An Indo-Portuguese contador from the 18th century. It is made from rosewood with padouk, ebony and ivory inlay. The contador has an opening at the top and also a fall front opening at the bottom to reveal a set of drawers inside. It has a typical inlay pattern found on early Goan inlay contadors. The feet may be later but are of original pattern.
