The heart amulet became popular in the New Kingdom (about 1550-1070 BC) , at the same time as the Book of the Dead. It became one of the most important amulets, one or more being placed on the upper torso of nearly all mummies. Some examples are shaped like a bull's heart, the hieroglyphic sign for 'heart'. Others have a scarab shape, the insect being associated with rebirth.
Phallic amulets like this were often hung in the doorways of Roman houses and shops, together with a lamp, to protect against evil spirits, and the sound of the bells attached to them was also believed to serve the same purpose. These aggressively male objects were not considered to be erotic, but as signs and bringers of prosperity, owing to their reproductive ability.
The Talisman of Charlemagne, c. 768-814. Two large cabochon sapphires - one oval, one square - enclose holy relics (what are supposed to be a remnant of the Holy Cross and a small piece of the Virgin's hair, visible only when looking through the oval sapphire at the front of the medallion.) The other gemstones are garnets, emeralds, and pearls.
This charm was intended for use in driving away evil or disease. The inscription reads 'drive out evil, and let good fortune come'. On the right is Zhong Kui, the famous demon-chaser, holding up his tablet of honour. He is chasing the spider, one of the Five Poisons. The Five Poisons are the lizard, the snake, the spider, the scorpion and the three-legged toad. These all feature on the back of the charm, together with the tiger, renowned for its powers in chasing away demons.
