I’m a fandom oldie and a strong proponent of “ship and let ship”, and I defend everyone else’s right to ship what they love… But I think that gives people the idea that I like, automatically love every single ship??? Or every single trope?
I don’t though!
There are a lot of fandom tropes that are on my “absolutely fuck no” list. There are a lot of irk kinks that are also on my “nope absolutely not” list, too. Personally, this is healthy. I’m able to look at something and go “Yep, I hate it, but it’s not harming anyone, so continue to do as you please.”
I think this is where the rubber meets the road for actually having principles. It’s easy to defend the things we like, just like it’s easy to fight for our own rights and those of people just like us. When you have to use logic to extend your sense of justice to people you can’t relate to, that actually takes effort.
This is Simon Snow and his nemesis/boyfriend Baz. They’re characters from the story within the story in my next book, “Fangirl.” (As illustrated on the cover by the amazing Noelle Stevenson!)

@rainbowrowell does davy cadwallader have a canon birthday? and if the answer is no, then i would like to suggest Jan 11. here is a persuasive list of reasons why this would be a good birthday for him:
would make him a Capricorn (he’s such a Capricorn)
would make it his birthday soon and that’d make me very happy. more important holiday than xmas for me.
I was traveling yesterday and could only get so much drawing done on the plane. I really thought it was gonna be quick and easy, but in a move that should surprise no one, it got away from me. As I was working on the sweater, I thought it would be made to fit with magic but I wanted Simon to be independent. So then I started thinking of how that construction might work and suddenly steeking and fair isle got involved. And I’ve drawn so many wings during this event that as I looked at them more critically, I realized that I had gotten the growth plates for the bones wrong. Of course my high school anatomy class knowledge would pick now to show up.
Spadey even got his own little mitt. (I loved this idea, @facewithoutheart! And thank you for letting me run logistics by you and just generally egging me on, @thewholelemon)
This will be my last day for COC as I’m regrettably spending the holidays with the in laws. I’m honestly surprised that I was able to participate in as many days as I did! I’m so proud of what I’ve managed to create and thank you so much for everyone’s kind words! The holidays can be hard and this made them a little easier for me.
Thank you to @emeryhall, @monbons & @confused-bi-queer for the tags! I wouldn’t normally think to participate in one of these roundups since I’m not a writer, but I’m so glad I took a moment to appreciate everything I’ve accomplished this year.
I can sometimes get bogged down thinking that I still have so far to go in terms of skill and I forget to look at how far I’ve come. I’ve experienced tremendous growth as an artist and baker and I don’t often give myself credit.
This year has also been a big year of making friendships and really feeling like part of a community. I had the pleasure of meeting a few fandom friends in person as well as connecting with others through friendship bracelets and holiday cards. It’s been the highlight of my year!
At least in this corner of the internet, I look forward to what the next year brings!

end of chapter fourteen, awtwb, in the exam room with niamh and agatha. Simon is sitting there, about to skin himself if it gets Nimah to stop touching his wings, and she’s kind of just. babbling on about “oh you saved us from this blah blah blah. you were unstoppable”
“I’ve never seen anyone fight like that”
and. literally one singular chapter earlier. the MOST DEVASTATING BLOW SIMON HAS EVER EVER HAD EXECUTED AGAINST HIM “I never thought I’d be the first thing you ever gave up on.” from baz. the person he loves most in the whole world.
(that line. “I never thought I’d be the first thing you ever gave up on” that one. is branded into the back of my eyelids. i will never ever. ever. forget the first time I read that line.)
“simon looks down” agatha he is not trying to remember. he is feeling an overhwhelming amount of guilt. He was duty bound to protect and fight for watford. that’s what was expected of him. But now that he’s not magickal, now that he doesn’t have any expectations from anyone else to keep fighting for. anything. (and yes, being present in his realtionship with Baz is an expectation. But he’s never been in a relationship like this before, and Baz certainly doesn’t ask for anything. Baz is still in shock that he gets to have any part of Simon at all, and he lets his own self loathing get in the way of the rest). he doesn’t. and that’s why he gave up on Baz. Because the very next thing he does is get the fuck out of that exam room and fucking BOLT. and he bolts directly to Baz’s door. to ask. to see. “would have mattered if I had been trying? would it have mattered if I fought to keep us?”
and obviously we know the answer. of course we know. but it just now occured to him. we know he makes his most sound decisions at the last minute in the very throat of danger. and sometimes, he makes the decision in danger’s stomach. and then he has to claw his way out.
and good news for him! he does claw his way out of this one! and his reward is ham and butter sandwiches and a soft nap with his boyfriend.
