New Pinned/Intro Post!

Hi, I’m Loo(or Alex), I’m a disabled queer artist and writer as well as a furry vtuber who streams four days a week on twitch(mostly Minecraft but also Soulsborne games and a variety of other stuff).

You may know me from The Tuna Post, in which several thousand of you came together to “force” me to buy damn near 30 American Dollars worth of imported fancy canned tuna to eat and review live on stream. If you’re here for it, said live review can be found on twitch and on my youtube channel. TL;DR: 10/10 would recommend.

I currently can’t work, so if you like what I’ve got going on here and want to help me out, I take donations over on my ko-fi <3 Aside from that, follows on twitch help a lot, even if you never end up watching!

(Also, I sell my twitch emotes as stickers on redbubble!)

As a general heads up I am heavily introverted and have ADHD, and between those and my disabilities eating up my energy I often take a while to respond to messages/tags/reblogs/DMs and sometimes forget entirely. This isn’t anything against you, and I’m working on it, but just something to keep in mind if you plan on interacting with me a lot.

You are welcome to put screenshots of my text posts on other sites/in your little tiktoks and youtube shorts, but I have rules.

(Note, this does not apply to my art. If I find you reposting my art I will do everything in my power to destroy you.)

  1. Above all else, I would simply appreciate it if you asked first. I am almost always okay with this sort of thing if people are actually willing to reach out and ask permission.
  2. Do not crop out, censor, or otherwise remove my username from the post.
  3. If it’s on a site I have an account on, I would love to be tagged in it. I’m a small creator, the boost would really help. Links are in my caard!
  4. Do not edit the post or purposefully leave parts out, you must repost it in it’s entirety with the words I actually used. The first post of mine that got big enough to get reposted ended up having an entire paragraph that summarized my point cut off, and that’s just rude. (Exception: If you ask first we can talk about editing the post to remove swears and such.)
  5. No AI. If you use AI for any part of the video I do not give you permission to use my content in any way.

This is it, the best news story (from BBC news):

image

Ok, so here is the croissant that started all this mess:

image

When asked about what kind of animal might it be, the woman said: "It's this, oh, what is it called... A lagun!"

The devil works fast, but The Krakow Animal Welfare Society works faster:

image

They already made a merchandise with an illustration of the lagun - they posted information about it on Facebook on Tuesday evening and by the Wednesday morning everything was already sold out.

My university professors are so delighted about this story that they are writing tons and tons of limericks, moskaliks and lepiejs (those two last genres are very popular, ridiculous and humorous types of short poems, in last decades popularized by Wisława Szymborska) and posting them on official Facebook pages of our university departments, and I am dying of laughter.

Important update on the story: owners of cafés and bakeries in Kraków realized that this wonderful idiocy that took over the country could bring them profit and help animals, and started selling croissants labeled as laguns: i.e. Massolit Café & Bakery is sending 10% of income from selling laguns to the Krakow Animal Welfare Society. Thankfully laguns are selling like hotcakes and bakeries don't plan to stop making them, so the story that started and could quickly die as just another seasonal nonsense transformed into a tool for helping small, helpless, vulnerable creatures, far less dangerous than vicious lagun.

This is how cyptids get started.

There’s also a large grey area between an Offensive Stereotype and “thing that can be misconstrued as a stereotype if one uses a particularly reductive lens of interpretation that the text itself is not endorsing”, and while I believe that creators should hold some level of responsibility to look out for potential unfortunate optics on their work, intentional or not, I also do think that placing the entire onus of trying to anticipate every single bad angle someone somewhere might take when reading the text upon the shoulders of the writers – instead of giving in that there should be also a level of responsibility on the part of the audience not to project whatever biases they might carry onto the text – is the kind of thing that will only end up reducing the range of stories that can be told about marginalized people.

A japanese-american Beth Harmon would be pidgeonholed as another nerdy asian stock character. Baby Driver with a black lead would be accused of perpetuating stereotypes about black youth and crime. Phantom Of The Opera with a female Phantom would be accused of playing into the predatory lesbian stereotype. Romeo & Juliet with a gay couple would be accused of pulling the bury your gays trope – and no, you can’t just rewrite it into having a happy ending, the final tragedy of the tale is the rock onto which the entire central thesis statement of the play stands on. Remove that one element and you change the whole point of the story from a “look at what senseless hatred does to our youth” cautionary tale to a “love conquers all” inspiration piece, and it may not be the story the author wants to tell.

Sometimes, in order for a given story to function (and keep in mind, by function I don’t mean just logistically, but also thematically) it is necessary that your protagonist has specific personality traits that will play out in significant ways in the story. Or that they come from a specific background that will be an important element to the narrative. Or that they go through a particular experience that will consist on crucial plot point. All those narrative tools and building blocks are considered to be completely harmless and neutral when telling stories about straight/white people but, when applied to marginalized characters, it can be difficult to navigate them as, depending on the type of story you might want to tell, you may be steering dangerously close to falling into Unfortunate Implications™. And trying to find alternatives as to avoid falling into potentially iffy subtext is not always easy, as, depending on how central the “problematic” element to your plot, it could alter the very foundation of the story you’re trying to tell beyond recognition. See the point above about Romeo & Juliet.

Like, I once saw a woman a gringa obviously accuse the movie Knives Out of racism because the one latina character in the otherwise consistently white and wealthy cast is the nurse, when everyone who watched the movie with their eyes and not their ass can see that the entire tension of the plot hinges upon not only the power imbalance between Martha and the Thrombeys, but also on her isolation as the one latina immigrant navigating a world of white rich people. I’ve seen people paint Rosa Diaz as an example of the Hothead Latina stereotype, when Rosa was originally written as a white woman (named Megan) and only turned latina later when Stephanie Beatriz was cast  – and it’s not like they could write out Rosa’s anger issues to avoid bad optics when it is such a defining trait of her character. I’ve seen people say Mulholland Drive is a lesbophobic movie when its story couldn’t even exist in first place if the fatally toxic lesbian relationship that moves the plot was healthy, or if it was straight.

That’s not to say we can’t ever question the larger patterns in stories about certain demographics, or not draw lines between artistic liberty and social responsibility, and much less that I know where such lines should be drawn. I made this post precisely to raise a discussion, not to silence people. But one thing I think it’s important to keep in mind in such discussions is that stereotypes, after all, are all about oversimplification. It is more productive, I believe, to evaluate the quality of the representation in any given piece of fiction by looking first into how much its minority characters are a) deep, complex, well-rounded, b) treated with care by the narrative, with plenty of focus and insight into their inner life, and c) a character in their own right that can carry their own storyline and doesn’t just exist to prop up other character’s stories. And only then, yes, look into their particular characterization, but without ever overlooking aspects such as the context and how nuanced such characterization is handled. Much like we’ve moved on from the simplistic mindset that a good female character is necessarily one that punches good otherwise she’s useless, I really do believe that it is time for us to move on from the the idea that there’s a one-size-fits-all model of good representation and start looking into the core of representation issues (meaning: how painfully flat it is, not to mention scarce) rather than the window dressing.

I know I am starting to sound like a broken record here, but it feels that being a latina author writing about latine characters is a losing game, when there’s extra pressure on minority authors to avoid ~problematic~ optics in their work on the basis of the “you should know better” argument. And this “lower common denominator” approach to representation, that bars people from exploring otherwise interesting and meaningful concepts in stories because the most narrow minded people in the audience will get their biases confirmed, in many ways, sounds like a new form of respectability politics. Why, if it was gringos that created and imposed those stereotypes onto my ethnicity, why it should be my responsibility as a latina creator to dispel such stereotypes by curbing my artistic expression? Instead of asking of them to take responsibility for the lenses and biases they bring onto the text? Why is it too much to ask from people to wrap their minds about the ridiculously basic concept that no story they consume about a marginalized person should be taken as a blanket representation of their entire community?

It’s ridiculous. Gringos at some point came up with the idea that latinos are all naturally inclined to crime, so now I, a latina who loves heist movies, can’t write a latino character who’s a cool car thief. Gentiles created antisemitic propaganda claiming that the jews are all blood drinking monsters, so now jewish authors who love vampires can’t write jewish vampires. Straights made up the idea that lesbian relationships tend to be unhealthy, so now sapphics who are into Brontë-ish gothic romance don’t get to read this type of story with lesbian protagonists. I want to scream.

And at the end of the day it all boils down to how people see marginalized characters as Representation™ first and narrative tools created to tell good stories later, if at all. White/straight characters get to be evaluated on how entertaining and tridimensional they are, whereas minority characters get to be evaluated on how well they’d fit into an after school special. Fuck this shit.

Like can you imagine how horrible and crushing it must be as a trans woman who wants to play sports to have the people defending you be doing it on the grounds that your HRT makes you weaker than men and it wouldn't be fair for you to go up against them because your poor, frail, female body could never beat a man at anything??

And can you also imagine being a trans man and having the time and work you've put in to be good at your sport all be chalked up to the testosterone and not your own heard work and earned skill?? To have people act like you're only good at something you love because you're using testosterone(especially because T is not a magic "be good at sports" drug).

And god intersex and nonbinary people just can't fucking assimilate at all and even if we change the rules so binary trans kids can play that does nothing to help kids who fall outside the binary entirely.

Like christ alive, I just want to apologize to all trans and intersex people. No one should be using misogyny to defend you, be it by saying your HTR makes you weak or that it makes you strong with no effort, or by acting like you not being included isn't a problem worth talking about. Trans and intersex people are just as capable as any cis person, their work and effort is just as real, and we should not belittle them in the quest to protect them. Stop spreading misogynistic beliefs about hormones and gender/sex, stop upholding the gender binary, stop pushing assimilation over liberation.

I'm so fucking mad rn. Trans and intersex people deserve SO much better.

Also pouring one out for cis girls. If people were out there, especially my parents, defending me on the grounds that I could never beat a man at anything I would be crushed. And livid. I’d never believe my parents when they congratulate me or encourage me ever again. It’s a horrible thing to hear, especially from people who claim to care about you and be progressive.

And like cis boys are only upset when women beat them because they were told from a young age that they are better and smarter and stronger than girls and that they should be humiliated if a girl is better than them, if we stopped fucking teaching them that this attitude would fade into obscurity, not be a cycle thst just won’t fucking quit.

This attitude helps no one. It holds us all back. And I’m sick of it.

I have to say, I know that the science shows that trans athletes on HTR are usually in-line with the physical capabilities of their fellow cis atheletes...but saying "estrogen degrades a trans woman's athletic abilities" just feels like we're capitulating to the idea that women are weaker than men and offering legitimacy to the idea that sex/gender segregation in sports is correct and based on biological reality, and not the real truth, which is that people with estrogen-dominant endocrine systems can absolutely go toe-to-toe against athletes with testosterone dominant endocrine systems and win and society doesn't like the idea of a "woman" beating a "man" which is why women are shoved into women's leagues where they can be paid less, treated like shit, and ignored.

Like...I know it's small steps with some people, but desegregating sports has been a major feminist talking point since I was a little kid and we should never, EVER lose sight of the fact that women not being able to play against men has absolutely NOTHING to do with athletic ability and everything to do with people hating women, especially ones that can, and do, beat men. The entire anti-trans athlete argument is based on the idea that cis women are biologically weak and cannot, under any circumstances, beat a man at any test of physical or mental ability, so if we let trans women(who are seen as men by these people) play against cis women then the cis women will always lose.

And that is not fucking true, and it's not untrue because "estrogen makes you weaker", it's not fucking true because women are just as strong and capable as men and can beat them in a fair fight and they always fucking have been. Using this argument is akin to critiquing the draft by saying the way to fix it is to make it so women have to sign up too. You're missing the point, the draft existing at all is the problem and you should not legitimize it's existence by trying to force women to deal with it too. No one should be drafted.

And, again, trans and cis and intersex women can play against and beat trans and cis and intersex men at sports. And trans men can also beat cis men. The problem is not who is strong and who is weak, it's that segregating sports by gender is fucking stupid sexist bullshit, it always has been and it always will be and we should stop doing it.

Also the existence of sex/gender segregated sports will always be exorsexist and intersexist and harm anyone who doesn't fit into the bullshit false sex/gender binary. We shouldn't separate sports by gender or sex because HUMANS cannot be truly separated by those things. There's too much variance and diversity. Intersex kids and nonbinary kids and any kid who falls outside the binary ALSO deserves to be allowed to play sports. And in a system where we still have "men's" sports and "women's" sports athletes that aren't men or women are left in the fucking dust. WE SHOULD NEVER SUPPORT A SYSTEM THAT DOES THAT.

So please, stop using the argument that estrogen makes trans women weak like "real women" and that's why they should be allowed into women's sports. On top of just being a really fucking sexist thing to say in general, it's ceding ground to deeply misogynistic and racist beliefs about women and their abilities, on top of legitimizing a system that fucks women over constantly and was built specifically to hold women back, and we can absolutely defend trans athletes(as well as intersex and nonbinary athletes) without falling back on the idea that there's only two sexes/genders and being a woman makes you weaker than a man always no matter what and testosterone is a magic ticket to being strong and makes you good at sports.

When a transphobe asks if you think it's okay for men to play against women you do not answer by explaining that estrogen HRT makes trans women as weak as real women or that trans women are actually women or that trans men are as strong as men due to HTR or are men, you respond by saying yes, I do fucking think it's okay because segregating sports by gender is horseshit that started with a bunch of misogynistic racists throwing a fit about a black teenage girl striking out two of the greatest baseball players of all time in the same game. Women's sports were born out of wanting an excuse to stop women from achieving as much as men, to pay them less, ignore them, and treat them like shit and we should move past that as a society. Idc what the reasoning is, supporting this binary ass view of sex and gender as if it's based at all in reality is not helping trans people, it's hurting them. If you can learn that the old guy in charge of FIFA used to say if female players want to be paid attention to they should just dress sexier despite the US women's team outperforming the men's team all the time and somehow still think any of this is about ability or skill or some biological reality then you aren't serious about trans and intersex liberation and do have a lot of internal misogyny you need to work on.

Stop defending trans people by legitimizing sexism and sex/bioessentialism. Women are strong, trans and cis and intersex, and they can do absolutely anything a man can do, as can nonbinary(intersex or not) people and trans men. The idea that any woman is biologically weaker than any given man is wrong. There is no biological reality supporting this idea. Stop telling little girls that they're weak, especially trans girls and trans men(since people see them as broken women who are weaker than men and shouldn't be allowed in men's sports) holy fuck, and stop telling them that the existence of women's sports is some just and correct thing when they're literally based on the idea that women are frail, weak little flowers who could get blown over by a stiff breeze and never beat a man at anything and were created as a response to women beating men at sports.

For now I do 100% believe trans kids should be allowed to play sports on whichever side feels right for them for any number of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with biological ability or winning, but aside from that, I don't actually think that trans women should be playing women's sports because I do not think women's sports should exist at all. All people, trans, cis, intersex, ect. should be able to play against each other because that is the world that actually protects and cares for trans and intersex people and women. Discard the binary, stop pretending women are weaker than men, stop erasing the bigoted reason women's sports even exist in the first place, and NEVER say that estrogen degrades athletic ability. You sound like the guy who tried to keep women out of the Boston Marathon on the basis that "no women could actually run 26 miles" that's who you fucking sound like when you say that. So stop fucking saying it.

Also, in case anyone does pull numbers on me, I fully believe the discrepancy in the abilities of women and men in sports has less to do with the actual ability of women and more to do with the fact that women’s sports is treated as lesser and women are not encouraged to be athletic and face an uphill battle with fucking chains around their legs just to get into the game at all. If we lived in a just and fair world where it’s NOT almost impossible to make money as a female athlete and they aren’t given sub-par equipment and not offered the same attention and funding as their male counterparts then I fully believe there would be barely any difference between men and women’s athletic abilities.

Any defense of gender segregating sports that refused to acknowledge the reason that exists in the first place and how much harder it is to be a female athlete than a male one specifically because they are treated as lesser and shoved into a league where they will be intentionally left behind is a flawed stance and we should be focusing on liberation from the binary, not pretending in this case separate but equal is real and in fact needs to exist. It doesn’t. Separate is never equal, especially in women’s sports. And if women, cis and trans and intersex, as well as trans men, were not fighting an uphill battle just to get on the field then they’d be doing just as good if not better than the cis men.

It always makes me think of this quote by Stephen Jay Gould:

“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.”

How many cis women who could have struck out Babe Ruth or won the Boston Marathon or be a better swimmer than Michael Phelps had to give up their dreams because they got pregnant at 17 and lived in a state where abortion is illegal? How many had to give up and find a job that actually paid them enough to eat? How many women like Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky and Serena Williams exist out there that will NEVER get a chance to be a top tier athlete because of trauma and abuse and sexism and injuries due to sub-par equipment or fields and endless sexism from everyone around them?? How many grew up with parents who refused to let them do anything even remotely masculine including playing sports?? How many were forced to drop out to take care of family because that’s expected of a woman?? How many live in small, poor towns that can barely afford to bankroll even one sport and ofc the one they pick is football?? Women’s basketball pays the players so little they have to spend the off season playing games in other countries because that’s the only way they can feed themselves, and I figure ALL of that really does get in the way of us seeing just how amazing and skilled and incredible women really can be when they play.

It’s just like the issues with assuming because the statistics around trans men facing violence being so low is because trans men don’t face things like rape and abuse and transphobic violence, instead of recognizing the truth, trans men are not seen as men by the system and often the people in charge of reporting statistics are transphobic(like cops), so they all get counted as violence against cis women. If we actually were able to accurately break down how many trans men are hurt and killed due to their gender the numbers would be higher. But as of right now, a vast majority of statistics are off due to how many trans men die and get a gravestone with a woman’s name on it. And tbh I’m sorry but police statistics are a terrible way to actually measure how bad violence against any given group of people is. (Like fr when did we start deciding who is the most oppressed based on what the fucking POLICE say??? I wouldn’t trust a cop to pet a llama at the Zoo, let alone accurately report the demographics of the vulnerable people at their bigoted mercy????)

We do not actually know exactly how powerful women truly are when it comes to sports because they aren’t allowed to actually be athletes and even the ones who do are underpaid and treated like shit and can never reach their full potential due to stress and hunger and trauma and abuse.

Don’t stop defending trans kids, NEVER STOP DEFENDING TRANS KIDS, but please stop defending women’s sports and the idea that women are weaker than men. I know this might shock you, but that hurts trans and intersex kids too, both girls and boys and everything in-between and outside. It also reinforces sexism and teaches cis boys that they’re stronger than all women and then they grow up to be sexist shitheads because they were never told that women are people worthy of respect.

I do not want trans kids being assimilated into the binary, it’s bad for all of us, I want the binary to stop existing. Liberation. Not assimilation. Not ever.
