📰 Solo VCs are rising in popularity once again. This means only one General Partner is leading the firm, versus multiples. 💔 Why? There are GP breakups going on all around us after partnerships have been tested by the market for years now. The bar to co-found a venture firm with a partner is very high. Those GPs that thought they might graft another one on in the short term to share the load are stopping in their tracks to deeply consider those implications. 🌱 Many are opting to bring in more junior talent and grow them into Partner roles instead. It’ll take time and capital to be able to do that as the firm grows. Talked to 3 diff GPs about this at dinner last night and we’re all leaning toward that approach in our short and long term planning. 💡 FYI - this is just an observation of the moment we’re in. There are plenty of firms thriving with full partnerships as well as solo GPs. But it’s worth calling out that new partnerships are particularly risky right now, especially if the partners haven’t worked with each other for a long time.

The ‘help’ VCs offer that founders wish they’d skip : From unsolicited intros to random conference invites 😐! -Making random introductions that weren’t requested -Inviting founders to conferences where the VC is speaking -Providing strategic advice without understanding the startup’s specific context -Conducting frequent check-ins without offering meaningful support -Forwarding articles about competitors -Recommending broad networking connections that aren’t relevant -Offering unsolicited product UX suggestions -Imposing rigid meeting schedules at inconvenient times -Sharing generic industry trends without actionable insights -Sending irrelevant templates or tools that don’t fit the startup’s stage or needs -Offering feedback that feels more critical than constructive -Making broad claims about experience without engaging with the startup’s unique situation For VCs, adding real value means aligning support with the founder’s specific needs and goals. ✨ Breaking: Magnetar Announces New Fund.- Magnetar Magnetar AI Ventures Fund LP, launched on August 26, 2024, is a $235 million venture capital fund focused on early-to-growth stage AI startups. The fund uniquely addresses challenges faced by AI startups in accessing compute resources by offering compute in exchange for equity. The strategy is designed to accelerate the development of generative AI technologies and enable startups to secure critical contracts. A few insights into the startup fundraising process from last week's talk with Chelsea Zhang (Equal Ventures) and Michelle Liao (DayZero) When you’re starting to fundraise Assign one founder to lead the process - Designating one founder to spearhead the process not only ensures a cohesive narrative and pitch but also effectively divides the demanding tasks of running the company and securing funds. Do your research - Tap into your network to glean insights from those who have raised money before. You can learn a lot from their experience. Thoroughly research potential VC funds to pitch, find the ones that are aligned with the vision and stage of your company. Don’t waste your time reaching out to investors that invest outside of your scope. Gaining momentum VCs move fast - VCs often operate with a clear investment thesis, having extensively researched the sectors they specialize in. As a result, they have a precise idea of what they're seeking and can swiftly recognize it. For example, before Chelsea came across DayZero - she had already seen 40+ variations of the same model. When VCs identify an opportunity that aligns with their criteria, they move fast. The investment process between Equal Ventures and DayZero took ~2 weeks. Gaining momentum during the process is important - Its important to end your VC conversations around the same time so you can round up all interested investors. Generating momentum involves prompting VCs to take action, which might entail instilling a sense of urgency or fostering a bit of FOMO to encourage swift decision-making. Closing the deal Be ready to negotiate quickly - Understanding which deal terms are important to you you as a Founder is crucial to research in advance. The process can unfold rapidly, making it overwhelming to decipher your priorities afterward. Dealing with rejection - Receiving a "no" from an investor doesn't invalidate your startup. Investors operate based on specific investment criteria, so it's important not to take rejection personally. There’s an investor out there that is probably a better fit; the key is to keep searching until you find them.

Breaking down our latest newsletter section by section, starting with our expanded focus in Deep Tech: --- We have built expertise in the robotics sector, and will continue to double (and triple) down on investing in this category, but we have been increasingly finding that robotics is naturally steering us into two exploding adjacent areas: Aerospace, and Advanced Manufacturing (which we define as industrials, semiconductors, materials science, and energy production). Stepping back, this expansion makes perfect sense. Robotics is an inherently horizontal platform - meaning it can be applied productively across multiple industries. This quality, paired with the fact that robotics has long shown the highest TRLs of any deep tech technology, makes it a kind of “gateway” to other sectors in the hard sciences. Now with the recent breakthroughs in AI for robotics, growing semiconductor demand, and the resurgence of aerospace and defense tech, we are seeing a dramatic uptake of robotics and relevant technologies in both advanced manufacturing and aerospace. As an added bonus of the expansion, many of the founder (and funder) networks across these landscapes have natural overlaps and linkages. ✨ Excited to see agemo, founded by Aymeric Zhuo and Osman Ramadan come out of stealth with a first product, to remove the barrier to entry to software creation using AI! 🤔 Ai x software? When we decided to lead their inception round, twelve months ago, the "Ai x software" landscape was already quite busy with 100M rounds raised to blow on GPU farms here and there, Copilot experiencing a lot of gtm traction, and lots of grand visions shared regarding the future of software development. 🧠 What was not around however was a strong, deeply technical team starting from first principles (like, you know, inference costs should not be 10K per request!) and who was working on solving the deeper problem of reasoning (vs bruteforcing / superscaling LLMs into oblivions). We found just that with Aymeric and Osman, whose path enabled them to learn and take the best from what had been done at Deepmind and Microsoft Research (Swiftkey), and figure out from that intellectual heritage the best novel way to approach that problem. 👋 As a firm too, it's really cool to partner again with firstminute capital (hey Sam Michael Lorcan) who invested in Wayve's inception round with us at the time and accepted a similar bet. In 2016, Waymo and other self-driving tech giants had already raised billions to go all in on the Lidar / map tech, yet, Alex the founder of Wayve famously said: "they will be the first to operate in 3 cities, we'll be the first company to operate in 100".
