My first week as a SWE Fellow at Headstarter AI has been an incredible journey, filled with learning, growth, and valuable insights. One of the highlights was attending the "Our Pathways to Tech" event, hosted by Yasin Ehsan 🚀, Faizan Ahmed, and the Headstarter team. The event featured amazing speakers like Nabeel Alamgir🦄, Shariar Kabir, Miguel Acero, and Dustin Beadle, who shared their wisdom on thriving in the tech industry. Here are some of the key takeaways that resonated with me: 1. Nabeel Alamgir's advice about taking ownership of our decisions and viewing rejections as opportunities to improve was particularly impactful. This mindset is essential for both professional and personal growth. 2. The importance of reaching out and building connections within the industry cannot be overstated. Networking and fostering relationships are crucial for career development and finding new opportunities. 3. Being part of Headstarter AI has reinforced the value of maintaining high standards and holding oneself accountable. This experience has taught me the importance of hard work, effective communication, and the joy of being part of a diverse community of developers. 4. Yesterday, I attended an insightful Zoom Q&A of almost 500 attendees with Headstarter AI featuring CEO Yasin Ehsan 🚀 and Mofi Rahman, a Developer Relations Engineer at Google. Mofi’s participation in nearly 30 hackathons as a student and almost 40 as a judge is truly impressive! He emphasized the importance of team collaboration, highlighting that being a good teammate is one of the top priorities for companies when hiring. In the tech industry, it’s not as simple as solving every problem and going home. Because today's problems are so complex and constantly evolving, we must adapt and continuously improve our problem-solving approaches, so we can keep doing the next best thing. Mofi discussed the importance of “golden signals,” which indicate a candidate’s fit for a particular team. As an applicant, you should ensure that what the company says about their teams aligns with what you truly want to do. The first step in tech, especially AI, is probably one of the hardest journeys because frequently, “you don't know what you don't know.” Mofi emphasizes the importance of being open to learning new things and uniqueness because if you’re doing what everyone else is doing, how are you standing out? Every innovator has a trait or idea that makes them unique. You want other teams to buy into the ideas you are selling. Explore what makes you unique. Everyday I am learning how Headstarter AI's unique curriculum provides a structured environment with team collaboration, accountability to present and deploy projects, and opportunities to push your limits. It helps keep people on the right track. Thank you, Robert and Justin, for insightful discussion. In the 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐂𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞 study, we argue that traditional cache hit and miss rates are misleading for 𝒔𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝒄𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 and should not be used. MeanCache is a user-centric semantic cache for LLM-based web services (e.g., ChatGPT). Excited to share that our paper, "Target Span Detection for Implicit Harmful Content," has been accepted as a full paper to ICTIR 2024! This research, co-authored with James Allan and Sheikh Muhammad Sarwar, tackles the challenging task of identifying implicit targets of hate speech on digital platforms. We developed the Implicit-Target-Span dataset by combining human annotations and Large Language Models (LLMs) through pooling. Our findings highlight the challenges in detecting subtler forms of hate speech, helping to develop more effective and explainable hate-speech detection models. 🌟 Unlocking the Power of Parallel Computing with NVIDIA! 🌟 I’m thrilled to share that I participated in NVIDIA's latest workshop on the 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗨𝗗𝗔 𝗖/𝗖++, hosting by Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Science Institute! As an operations researcher and data science enthusiast, learning how to boost the performance and processing time of programs offers numerous benefits. This workshop significantly deepened my programming skills in C and C++, and understanding of parallel compution using CUDA. Here’s a recap of what I learned during the workshop: 1. 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙂𝙋𝙐 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙪𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨: - Wrote, compiled, and executed C/C++ programs that integrate CPU functions and launch GPU kernels. - Controlled parallel thread hierarchy using execution configurations. - Refactored serial loops to execute iterations in parallel on a GPU. - Managed memory allocation and deallocation for both CPUs and GPUs. - Handled errors generated by CUDA code. 2. 𝑨𝑷𝑶𝑫 𝑴𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒅𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚: - Explored the APOD design cycle: Assess, Parallelize, Optimize, Deploy. This iterative approach allows developers to apply incremental improvements to enhance performance and effectively ship their code. - Used the Nsight Systems command-line tool (nsys) to profile accelerated application performance. - Gained insights into Streaming Multiprocessors to optimize execution configurations. - Understood Unified Memory behavior concerning page faulting and data migrations. - Employed asynchronous memory prefetching to minimize page faults and enhance performance. - Utilized an iterative development cycle for rapid acceleration and deployment of applications. 📍The workshop concluded with an engaging assessment where we simulated an N-body problem on the GPU, comparing performance with traditional CPU execution. Excited to share that my latest research paper, "Lifelong Learning-Based Optimal Trajectory Tracking Control of Constrained Nonlinear Affine Systems Using Deep Neural Networks," has been accepted by the prestigious IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics! In this work, we introduce a novel approach using deep neural networks to address optimal trajectory tracking in uncertain nonlinear systems with state constraints. Our method leverages a lifelong learning scheme to enhance performance and mitigate forgetting in multitasking environments. My team and I were proud to present our research at UC Berkeley College of Computing, Data Science, and Society’s Discovery Symposium. Through the Data Discovery Program, I had the opportunity to conduct machine learning research with BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Our project focused on developing neural network-based models to forecast overheat events in train control rooms. By analyzing complex temperature trends, along with their velocities and accelerations, we aimed to enhance operational reliability for one of the Bay Area's most vital transit systems. I am proud to share that our Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) neural network outperformed the previously deployed predictive model. This has been such a fulfilling opportunity to dive deeper into machine learning and explore different areas within data science. It's an exciting time in my life as I continue to discover my passions and expand my technical skills! A huge thank you to our mentor, Dr. Yu (Aaron) Shen, for guiding us, and to my teammates Ayumu Ueda, Luca Butera, Yuwei Chen, and Tiange Chen for their hard work and intellectual contributions.
