Settlements with two GNIS IDs

A settlement can have a Census/Civil GNIS ID plus a Populated Place GNIS ID. The Census Code in the GNIS records will match if the two GNIS IDs refer to the same settlement.

The following examples show how to enter two GNIS IDs for a settlement.

Census and Populated Place

Forest Hills (Q2112536) →

• GNIS Feature ID (P590) → 2392999 (Class: Census; Census Code: 29580)
  • subject has role (P2868) → census-designated place in the United States (Q498162)
• GNIS Feature ID (P590) → 1867318 (Class: Populated Place; Census Code: 29580)
  • subject has role (P2868) → human settlement (Q486972)

Civil and Populated Place

Laurens (Q3461791) →

• GNIS Feature ID (P590) → 2390935 (Class: Civil; Census Code: 41520)
  • subject has role (P2868) → administrative territorial entity (Q56061)
• GNIS Feature ID (P590) → 955097 (Class: Populated Place; Census Code: 41520)
  • subject has role (P2868) → human settlement (Q486972)

Laurens (Q6500961) (Town with the same name as the village)
