How do you do what you do?

edit

What is the academic discipline or tradition that you are using to give you the language to be able to discuss classification in the way that you do? Do you have any suggestions for what I as a total beginner might be able to read to be able to explain concepts on Wikidata as you do? What is your level of expertise in talking about this kind of classification and how much time commitment did you make to be able to talk in this way? Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:56, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Lane, when I talk about classification I often use language from ontology, a field of computer science concerned with formal knowledge representation. I tend to use vocabulary from the Web Ontology Language -- OWL. OWL is an ontology language for the Semantic Web recommended by the W3C. It's based on RDF and RDFS.
In addition to the resources linked above, I'd recommend anyone interested in the subject to read the W3C OWL2 Primer. I also recommend The Semantic Web, a 2001 Scientific American article by Tim Berners-Lee and other researchers that laid out a motivating vision. Since you're interested in biology, it's worth pointing out that biologists have been a very active bunch in ontology and Semantic Web practices, coming up with a broad family of ontologies called OBO (Open Biomedical Ontologies) -- see The OBO Foundry: coordinated evolution of ontologies to support biomedical data integration by Barry Smith et al. Check out the Wikidata reading list, too.
I have been enthralled with Wikidata and its potential for structuring knowledge for about a year. I don't consider myself to be an ontology expert, but I have spent a major chunk of this year familiarizing myself with the field and related topics discussed above. I think ontology, the Semantic Web and OWL are all very important things to have in mind as we try to structure all human knowledge. Emw (talk) 13:58, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Geoshapes

edit

Hi Lane,

We discussed geoshapes in Wikidata a few months ago. I have created a few of sets of geoshapes since then, including countries of the world and US States, and linked from my userpage examples of queries to visualise data as choropleth maps. Documentation of the workflow is high on my things to do list; I am now using AutoWikiBrowser to create the mapdata in Commons. Also, check out the Wikidata Visualization tool if you have not seen it already.

Loading Clinical Trials via Bot

edit

Here's a google sheet of the clinical trials found in wikidata today.

As of this afternoon (2/7/19), looks like there are ~1,500; User:Mahdimoqri has added most of them.

A couple things...

  1. Will reach out to User:Mahdimoqri so maybe I can coordinate with him.
  2. User:Mahdimoqri is linking studies to conditions using property P1050 rather than P2175 . I'm fine with either and maybe P1050 is preferred?
  3. Thinking I need to adjust my bot to find studies already existing in wikidata and add missing properties. What do you think?

(BTW - this is my very first talk, so please excuse any egregious breaches in etiquette.)  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tibbs001 (talk • contribs) at 7 February 2019‎ (UTC).

Needs assessment for Wikidata Movement Resource

edit

Hi Bluerasberry,

CIS-A2K is planning to invest some resources from May-June 2020 to create community movement resource (CMR) materials in English and different Indic languages for Wikidata in the form of tutorials, handbooks, infographics, videos, animations etc. The aim of this initiative is to build a pool of resource materials for Wikidata eventually, which will serve as ready-made handy references for new as well as experienced users. You are requested to fill up this form, so that we can understand your needs on different topics of Wikidata. You are also very welcome to actively participate in the process and help us build the CMR with your different areas of expertise.

Indian scientists datathon

edit

Hi Bluerasberry,

You are receiving this message as you are one of the participants of WikiProject India on Wikidata and/or a subscriber of the Wikidata India newsletter.

Hope you and your loved ones are safe and sound during this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation.

This is for your kind information that, from 22nd May, 2020 Friday to 24th May, 2020 Sunday, a datathon will be happening on Indian scientists on Wikidata. The lack of data about Indian scientists, their works and publications on Wikidata is the reason behind conducting the datathon. Considering the ongoing pandemic, the datathon will also focus on scientists working on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19.

The tasklist of the datathon is flexible. Participants can choose their own preferred task on this topic

Hoping for your active participation.

Take care and stay safe,

Following up on TABernacle question from this call

edit

Hi Lane, I'm still not finding the page I told you about as an answer to what to do about giant TABernacle links. Sorry for the wild goose chase! I do, however, frequently see a Listeria list with its TABernacle link, e.g. this project I work with often. Out of curiosity, is there any reason you can't use Listeria on the project page in this case? --Librarian lena (talk) 17:04, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Librarian lena: Check out Wikidata:Request a query and see how they use{{SPARQL}}. Listeria is for generating and publishing tables, which is nice, but I am interested in only archiving queries which output to TABernacle to discuss like the "request a query" page does for the Wikidata Query Service. Suppose that we had 10-40 TABernacle links to showcase on a WikiProject. Should those be typical Wikilinks, or should we format those in some template?
This might be premature because TABernacle itself still is most undocumented.
And yes - maybe the way to do it is just to generate a listeria page, except that doing that seems excessive when I have no wish to ever send anyone to the page. Thoughts? Thanks for the reply. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:03, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sounds like I didn't get the full scope of what you were describing on the call, so thanks for clarifying. I noticed on the help page that Will asked a question about getting the modified information out through a SPARQL query once you add columns in TABernacle, which I'm interested to see if anyone responds to, but I don't know how helpful if it is in your use case if there's no template that invokes the tool. Are you visualizing a bunch of tables one after the other, or just the SPARQL behind the tables being displayed with an external link? --Librarian lena (talk) 21:35, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Lane, how are you doing? I remember you mentioned a fixed etherpad URL for the meetings. If that is the case, would you mind adding it on the meeting page? Best, TiagoLubiana (talk) 00:01, 27 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Invitation for the WikiProject COVID-19 call tomorrow (Monday, 15 of June)

edit

Hello Lane,

How are you? I hope things are all right.

I would like to invite you to the tomorrow (Monday, 15 of June) call of the Wikiproject COVID-19 at 15:00 UTC .

This is the link for the call: https://meet.google.com/vtp-ighz-npx

This is the link for the etherpad: https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/wikidata_covid_notes

The WikiProject seems to be losing momentum. Perception of the size of COVID-19 as an enormous problem is fading (at least in Brazil). That might be a sign of things getting better, but it is also very dangerous (as they might not be that better yet).

In tomorrow's call, I would like to discuss with you two important and related questions:

- How can this WikiProject best serve the anti-COVID-19 effort?

- What can this project offer for the post-COVID-19 Wikidata world?

As usual, if you have any topics to add, you can do so either before at the Project Meeting Page or at the meeting. or at the meeting.

I hope you can make it!

All the best,

Tiago TiagoLubiana (talk) 00:37, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

OpenStreetMap

edit

Feel free to ignore me as it is a bit offtopic (about OpenStreetMap, where I am more active).

you mentioned "Wikidata needs some policy in place to prevent corporate capture of the sort that OpenStreetMap experienced" - I am bit curious, what you consider as already succesful corporate takeover?

"I look at OpenStreetMap and see huge volunteer community encroachment by paid editors" - where you see it?

To be clear - I am not claiming that either has not happened at all, but I am curious where it is happening according to someone less active in OSM (or maybe you are active in OSM anyway?)

Wikiproject Climate Change project

edit

See Wikipedia:Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Climate_change#ET/carbon_sink_upscaling_jam_?

Hey bluerasberry, I don’t know how wikidata works, but suppose it works with separate tables from which you can export data and do calculations.

Could you contact the organisations behind climate action tracker and climate change performance index directly (via e-mail) and ask for their raw data and upload that info to wikidata ? Alternatively you can also ask they make a wikidata account and do it themselves (probably easier, maintenance-wise as data needs to be updated often, also they could hypothetically also have their own website use the tables they upload here so everything is in a central location and maintained/updated centrally). Their websites basically just show the visualisations (maps) so I doubt they will mind putting the core data at Wikidata (both would accomplete each other then and the core data can then also be used for other tables such as the complex table I proposed over at Wikipedia:Wikiproject Climate Change -which gives increased insight/transparency)

We need:

  • table with actual emissions for each country (in tonnes of co2 per year)
  • table with allowed emissions under Paris agreement (in tonnes of co2 per year)
  • table with % of achieved emission reductions under Paris agreement

When that’s done those % can be exported to the more elaborate table at wikipedia which we’re trying to make with the Wikiproject Climate Change members (linking it with NDC measures that have been put in place).

I think this approach (having those organisations give us most of the info like this) will be much easier and better for us.

BTW: perhaps that something similar could be done for the Climate Clock article (contact Human Impact Lab, Concordia University via davidusher.com) ? Would be useful to have the data at wikidata for that too, and be able to display the up-to-date clock directly at the Climate Clock page.

Finally, perhaps it's useful to see whether trackers can be made for keeping track of progress regarding to the % of global protected areas (see wikipedia:protected area and EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, Nature's 30x30 for Nature Petition (goal: 30% protection). Also, perhaps a tracker for keeping track how much % of global cities have made their city-centers car-free could be useful (not sure whether there are tables with that info, however there are tables with global car production numbers and probably number of cars in circulation). That data is useful to track as when that number goes down, that's an indication that transport is improving (cars tend to be awful to transport people or even cargo, alternatives such as buses, subways, ships, large aircraft, ... are much more efficient). Also, quite often, cars are used just for the sake of comfort (city driving) and a bike, tricycle or cargobike tends to suffice as well (and has no emissions or extremely low emissions).

P373

edit

Hi, I'm just curious why you add Commons category (P373) when an item already has a sitelink to the same category? For example [1]. It seems redundant to me, but perhaps you have a reason? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:59, 4 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

@MSGJ: I wish that we had a central documentation page where we could post notes and reasonably expect others to find it and change things if needed.
Here are my reasons:
  1. Users know how to query properties; querying Wikimedia sitelinks is through a different process and not as easy
  2. By applying a property, the statement gets put into Wikidata's community curated ontology. The sitelinks are out of that system.
  3. Commons has multiple namespaces. You linked to the category, but having both Commons pages and categories is not uncommons. For example, Commons:Joe Biden and Commons:Category:Joe Biden

Thoughts?

Invitation to participate in the WQT UI requirements elicitation online workshop

edit

Dear Bluerasberry,

I hope you are doing well,

We are a group of researchers from King’s College London working on developing WQT (Wikidata Quality Toolkit), which will support a diverse set of editors in curating and validating Wikidata content.

We are inviting you to participate in an online workshop aimed at understanding the requirements for designing effective and easy-to-use user interfaces (UI) for three tools within WQT that can support the daily activities of Wikidata editors: recommending items to edit based on their personal preferences, finding items that need better references, and generating entity schemas automatically for better item quality.

The main activity during this workshop will be UI mockup sketching. To facilitate this, we encourage you to attend the workshop using a tablet or laptop with PowerPoint installed or any other drawing tools you prefer. This will allow for a more interactive and productive session as we delve into the UI mockup sketching activities.

Participation is completely voluntary. You should only take part if you want to and choosing not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. However, your cooperation will be valuable for the WQT design. Please note that all data and responses collected during the workshop will be used solely for the purpose of improving the WQT and understanding editor requirements. We will analyze the results in an anonymized form, ensuring your privacy is protected. Personal information will be kept confidential and will be deleted once it has served its purpose in this research.

The online workshop, which will be held on April 5th, should take no more than 3 hours.

If you agree to participate in this workshop, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form to register your interest https://forms.office.com/e/9mrE8rXZVg Then, I will contact you with all the instructions for the workshop.

For more information about my project, please read this page: https://king-s-knowledge-graph-lab.github.io/WikidataQualityToolkit/

If you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me at the email address mentioned above.

Thank you for considering taking part in this project.
