Multilingual ?
editI miss the multilingual part on the tours. I think for now if you replace "Earth" by {{Q|2}} and "third planet in the Solar System" with {{autodescription|Q2}} etc. it will not confuse people whou have set their language to other than English. HenkvD (talk) 06:32, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, the tours are designed to be easy translatable. However, we want to get some feedback first so we don't waste translators' time when some general things well change. However, thanks for the suggestion. -- Bene* talk 07:44, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
- The second tour with the statements edits an empty item without any label or description. However the tour claims it is the item for earth.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 20:21, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
- We might add the label of the real earth item. However, storing all the labels in the script is not a good idea imo. -- Bene* talk 12:33, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
- Or else you give the opportunity to edit label + description first, then add statements.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 00:34, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Lorem ipsum
editThe last 6 slides on the statements tour are lorem ipsum! Secretlady (talk) 23:11, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Secretlady, I cannot reproduce this issue. In which language do you experience this error? -- Bene* talk 04:34, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
- The tour tells me it is not available in British English and sets itself as English. The lorum ipsum starts from the third Properties and values slide. I can't see it in Wikidata:Tours/StatementsSecretlady (talk) 21:40, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
- I've translated the tour into British English in case that is part of the problem. The machine I am using is IE8, https and no java script. Secretlady (talk) 21:55, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Two buttons
editWe have two buttons on the page: "Start with the first tutorial" and "Statt this tutorial" in the item section that start the same tour.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 00:31, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
- Is that a problem? -- Bene* talk 04:30, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
- I tried both buttons just to find out there are not three tours, just two. A lot of users as me will do the first tour twice instead of doing tour 1+2.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 11:59, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
Broken
editIs there any reason why the tours don't actually work? One can see the textboxes in the middle of the screen but when it's meant to go off and do something, it doesn't (at least on the current version of Firefox), so that one can't see what it's referring to. I'm partially visually impaired, so it is very frustrating. Orderinchaos (talk) 21:49, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
- @Bene*: Any idea what the issue is? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 20:38, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
- There was a breaking change in the js interface again so I now switched to the mediawiki javascript api. I think relying on any Wikibase javascript code is unfortunately a bad idea and should be avoided everywhere. -- Bene* talk 09:21, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
- I cannot get the tour to work either. I am looking into Wikidata as an option for students who with work with my campus' "Semana i (I Week)" event, which may very well mean hundreds of students next March. I need to understand Wikidata in order to figure out what we can do. Thanks!Thelmadatter (talk) 21:32, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
- I'm looking into it but I fear the api of the Guided tours extension has changed so I need to rewrite some parts of the code perhaps. Hopefully this won't take too long. -- Bene* talk 10:55, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Maybe it should have a (temporary) "OUT OF ORDER" sign
editIs anything new as of 15-Feb-2015? I think it is still broken, and -- confusing!
IMHO it would be better if it at least had some disclaimer, stating that the tours do not work. I wasted a lot of time before eventually stumbling upon this "Talk:" page, which seems to indicate that the problem has been a known issue for months. IMHO it would be better if it had a statement -- a BIG one, with, like, some banner across the page -- saying "[temporarily] OUT OF ORDER" ... or something like that. Just my 0.02. YMMV. - Only "lore ipsum" from the first pop-up and onward, on the first space and the first tutorial ends with that. I have 7 students sitting here tomorrow that will get a Wikidata schooling. The Turorials would have been nice. They should really get an "out of service" sign and T85719 should be reopened. --Gereon K. (talk) 22:27, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
- P.S.: I just notice that it's not working in English but working in German. That doesn't help in an English language workshop. --Gereon K. (talk) 00:08, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
Inadequate
editEnd users need more documentation and explanation than the two Tours that are available. I am very supportive of Wikidata as a concept but when the information gets pulled from Wikipedia onto Wikidata the documentation needs to be there so that editors can edit the information easily -- and have enough knowledge skills abilities via training modules and simple documentation to do so. See depreciation of Authority Control templates as example where documentation does not exist, presenting barriers to editors who may need to update or add info to this section. Thanks. -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 02:01, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Additional thought: Please make sure there is documentation BEFORE things are depreciated. It's clear people are excited at the possibilities of these new options but It's very important that documentation that is user friendly and easy to use exist first! -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 02:03, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
define "soon"?
editHow "soon" are these other tutorials coming? Is there a timeline? Is there a current owner for making this happen? Ijon (talk) 04:42, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
- Unfortunately not. I have it on my list of tasks for students who want to do work around Wikidata but so far noone took this. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:11, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
- May I suggest, then, to change it from "coming soon" to "not ready yet" or something similar? And perhaps to proactively encourage volunteers to take up producing such tours, e.g. through the mailing list? Ijon (talk) 01:38, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): thanks for removing the misleading "soon" and the ghosts of unimplemented tours. I still think it would be tremendously useful to allocate some time to implement additional tours showcasing the various basic flows, as well as flows of Lexeme and (soon SDoC). I think it is the most scalable investment in on-boarding we can make. Whom do I need to advocate to to up the priority for this? Ijon (talk) 04:32, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Heh me. I totally get that this is important and it pains me that we're not making progress. But I don't see how the dev team can handle this atm :(. I'll continue to push this more as a task that someone else can do and it'd be great if you and others could help with that. It is a task that doesn't need to be done by the dev team. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 08:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Items tour: translation problems
editI started translating the tour, but ran into problems with this text: "For example, “2007 nature documentary film” and “one of the four classical elements” are both descriptions for items called Earth". The problem here is that in for instance Norwegian, the label for the classical element ("jord") is not the same as the label for the planet ("jorda" or "jorden"). And so, the example doesn't make sense. But I guess it could be hard to find an example that works well for all languages, so perhaps the best is if just each translator chooses an example element that works well in their language? Change the logo file to a 2D barcode?
editI'd recommend a 2D barcode that actually is scannable for your logo file instead of an unreadable portion of a barcode. – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.22.12.35 (talk • contribs).
- The logo is Morse code, so it is readable and scannable. --Pasleim (talk) 14:44, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
The first tour doesn't seem to launch?
editI launched the first tour and it took me to the Wikidata page for Earth, but nothing that seemed like a tour. I then tried the second tour and that took me to "No label defined" but after a number of seconds popped up a window "Welcome to the Statements Tour", so I assume something similar should have happened in the first tour. I have repeated the attempt to launch the first tour a number of times and waited some minutes to see if the tour would launch but no joy! 02:11, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
Neither Tours Work!
editAs a complete newbie to Wikidata I'm really troubled that these tours don't work. Have tried in 4 different browsers and nothing. I'm not even sure if I'm writing this in the correct place. If you want newbie's to learn then these tours would be great - if they worked. DHWorth (talk) 14:21, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

Recent Changes
editIs there a way to stop the tour items from showing up in Recent Changes? They are often flagged as having problems and I keep finding myself investigating suspicious changes only to find they are just part of the tour. Cheers, Bovlb (talk) 19:16, 3 July 2018 (UTC)
- We can have a bot to automatically patrol all changes to these items and also exclude them from abuse filters. But I have never done this because I wasn't sure if this couldn't be a vector for vandals. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 20:13, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Request: Tutorial on adding a reference
editI'm new to Wikidata. I'd like to add a reference for some data I'm adding. I haven't learnt it from the tutorials and I haven't figured it out myself yet. TFJamMan (talk) 15:54, 19 June 2019 (UTC)
- I've figured it out by looking at other examples on WikiData. There's also a section on help page: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Contents but it would be good if it was renamed from "Guidelines for sourcing statements" to "Guidelines for sourcing (referencing) statements" TFJamMan (talk) 16:35, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

Tours troubleshooting
editHi! I am new here, but once upon a time had a lot of experience in troubleshooting (including exactly describing what happened when). Here, tours worked erratic.
- Sometimes tutorial panel with istructions lies exactly ower the entry area I think I should interact with on the page below tutorial. When I went back and forth (pressing apropriate "arrow buttons" on instruction panels), next time the panel's position was different so I could enter the data as instructed.
- Couldn't reproduce when I tried (yet).
- Sometimes instructions in tutorial are not consistent with status of editing on the page below tutorial. Tutorial is not in any way sinchronised with page below, and a random mouse click, or keypress (enter of Fx key e.g.) can easily put it out of sync in a way that new user shall possibly not get out of easily. I had't, until I went from contents centered (from "what I intend to do") to troubleshooting mode ("how exactly am I doing it and how exactly it responds"). Possibly reason for some of previous complaints.
- Reproducible. Possible remedial: concise advance warning about this behavior to user of tutorial, and/or something about it in FAQ.
- Sometimes tutorial panel doesn't act on arrow button clicks. Got out with escape key, and went back with back key on browser (tutorial restarted, and also cleared page Earth of what was enetered in previous try).
- Not remembered what panel exactly, and wasn't reproducible (yet). --Marjan Tomki SI (talk) 09:40, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Bug in Wikidata Tour in french
editHello,
During the beta-testing of the Wikidata MOOC, it appeared that the exercise of adding sources to the Wikidata tour: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q85408509&tour=wbreferences&data=ok does not work (at least with a Firefox browser).
Is the cause known? Is it because this : Wikidata:Tours/References/fr is not fully translated in french ? Thanks in advance for the clarification!
Notability
editPlease forgive my lack of familiarity with the tours, but can someone tell me what coverage there is of notability? Will someone who has done all the tours know how to create a new item that won't get deleted? Thanks, Bovlb (talk) 16:51, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
Template when you find something that is incorrect?
editAre there any templates used when you find something incorrect that isn't easly solved? For example I found that the birthdate for Thomas Wentworth, 5th Baron Wentworth is unknown - and I can't find a good source for it. The date stated here is the date when he was baptised - and maybe that year is incorrect as well. --AHA2 (talk) 09:44, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- @AHA2: No, Wikidata works very different from Wikipedia and does not use templates (and categories) for content management.
- For challenging presumably wrong data, I usually follow this rule of thumb:
- If the data seems wrong and there is no source for it, you may remove it.
- I do not consider "imported from: wiki" a valid source, but it can serve as a guidance for finding a valid one.
- If there is a source for it, you should not remove it. If there is a source claiming a different value, add it as an alternative. Then possibly use Help:Ranks.
- If the data seems wrong and there is no source for it, you may remove it.
- Note that if you just remove the data, chances are a bot will eventually add it back. This used to happen when imports from Wikipedias were more common. But the trend is changing and imports from credible sources are becoming more common. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:58, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
