Geological horror. You find a geode and crack it open and the crystal lining its walls is human blood that can't be genetically matched to anyone. You find a human skeleton but every one of the bones is made from rock, a rock that you know can't be whittled into those shapes. You find layers of clay and loam that sport ancient fossils at the top and the still-rotting corpses of modern animals at the bottom.
This reminds me of the blood river in Antarctica. For like a century scientists had no clue why this river looked like, acted like, and felt exactly like blood. Turns out it’s just really high in iron.

ug can we stop talking about power levels and blood quanta in tolkien. that’s not how any of this works. and even if it is, maybe we should change it and stop talking about like its math equation eugenics cuz its both narratively boring and gross. I don’t personally think that is what tolkien intended (he was writing myths not biology), you can interpret it differently but I will submit its a boring choice to make.
e.g. Elrond is “Half Elven” and his children are “Half Elven”, just like Elwing was half elven. – it isn’t some progressive subdivision forever based on elven chromosomes or something. It’s a choice the gods (i.e. Mandos) are giving his family.
Even with Dior he died young and after Luthien had been incarnated as a mortal. For all we know he has nothing genetically different about him other than being very pretty.
And none of this has any bearing on their magical ability.
(yes, older elves, especially those who existed in the time of the trees or among the Valar are more powerful, in tune with their spirit selves, get favors from the gods. And knowledge/affinity also gets transmitted among families and ethnic groups. And I’m not saying there aren’t weird inheritance things going on with Numenorians – but that is seen as a favor from the gods for their loyalty, not a percent of blood – aragorn is thousands of years removed from Isildur, after all. These stories are meant to be legendary tales like the mythological bits of the bible where the people in genesis lived hundreds of years, not like some special magical gene or something).
I feel like i’m trapped in the worst parts of the dragonball fandom arguing about whether goku can beat superman and what it means to be 1/8 saiyan.
Melkor may be Morgoth but Mandos is still the Most Goth.
where is all the art that perfectly appeals specifically to my exact tastes and desires and nobody elses
another absolutely fantastic trope is when a scifi/fantasy character calls the oblivious object of their affections a term of endearment in their fictional first language during an emotional moment which they refuse to translate, and their love interest assumes due to the unresolved sexual tension fuelled rivalry aspect of their relationship that it's an insult, only to have their world absolutely rocked to its core when they finally manage to get a translation and realize that the other person has been pining for them the entire goddamn time
like,
character a: it's just, i try so hard but i honestly think [character b] hates me. i mean, they called me a [untranslated word or phrase] a few weeks ago, and they've hardly looked, let alone spoken to me since then :(
person they're talking to: "[untranslated word or phrase]"? are you sure?
character a: ...i think so. why?
person they're talking to: hmm. yeah. well that's uh. well it's not an insult. that's a declaration of love.
character a: w
character a: what
Another popular one, especially in wealthier US families, was that your son would “move to Europe,” and then a few months later your “niece” would move into town and live in his old bedroom.
Trans isn’t new. We just have to know how to look for it in history.
