Overview
Melanie Quiñones, or known better as Arañaut, is Earth-3142's Spider-Man. After working under the "Spider-Man" moniker for a while in his home universe, he took up his current job within the Spider Society as commander and co-recruitor of its space sector. You can now find him around the Space Station, the Society's second HQ, alongside his holographic AI assistant JAY. He works closely with Miguel O'Hara as co-leader of the entire Society, making sure all communications between both HQs flow without a hitch.
Personality
Melanie is high-spirited and loves to tease when given the opportunity, which has often times landed him out of favor with the touchy types. At heart, Melanie knows when to reel things in and accomodate for anyone who might find his behavior to be too much to handle. Because he tends to get things done very quickly, some think he doesn't take his job seriously when they see him constantly hanging about. He's just really good at his job!

Design

Notes
  • Vitiligo, earrings, and mouth scar not optional.
  • Keep him muscular. For reference, he should be a bit bigger than Delilah and smaller than Miguel.
  • The Spider eyes on his helmet follow his expressions 1-to-1.
  • When not in his suit, he wears clothing that was typical in the 1980's. Tends to gravitate towards feminine styles.
  • Any other hairstyle is okay as long as you keep his bangs.
  • His earrings only have three points. If you look real close you can see the inner points are missing on both.
  • Earrings can change color to match current outfit.
Powers
Spider Physiology
Same powers as Earth-616's Spider-Man.
Singularity
  • Gained retractable fangs. They do not have any venomous fluids within them, their only purpose is to tear things apart/open.
  • Distal and middle phalanx parts of the fingers morph to shape into sharp claws which secrete venom that appears as a black liquid. This venom slows brain processes for 10 seconds, but only if it makes contact with skin. Because of this, the claws are necessary for eliminating any obstructions. He is self-immune to this venom unless it's orally-ingested.
  • Turns scleras black and irises white when at full power. Otherwise, only the fangs and claws manifest.
  • Loosens jaw hinges to allow wider jaw movement before a bite. Pushing the limit of this ability risks splitting the sides of the mouth open.
  • Cannot remain long in this state or he will experience migraines and hallucinations.
Equipment
Spider-Man's Suit
Melanie's suit is made of a flexible, durable metal that gives the appearance of regular fabric. The only thing made of pure metal is his helmet.
Web-shooters
Same as Earth-616's Spider-Man. These are embedded inside the material his suit, the webs eject from the inner wrist areas.
Star earrings
  • Have embedded microphones and speakers that allow them to act as communication devices.
  • Has embedded projector system for JAY's hologram.
  • Has gemstone in the center that nullifies Singularity, preventing sudden and unwilling shifts into this form.
Dimensional travel gizmo
Functions the same as all of the other gizmos, the only difference is that his and all of his recruits' watches glow blue instead of orange.

Story

Early life
Melanie grew up with his grandmother for the majority of his life after his parents' unexpectantly died in a car crash when he was about four years old. When she too passed away, he was placed in the foster care system before being adopted by a woman by the name of Lourdes. It wasn't until he turned 18 that he left her care, though he still occasionally visits her.

After finishing graduate school, he landed a job at QRKS [one of the leading astronomy-centered institutes on the 1st Level of the moon] as a scientist thanks to the research he did as a student. It was here that he met Julio and became close friends with him. Their coworkers called them "MJ" as they were always seen together, whether it was in or out of work.

His exceptional work at QRKS caught the eye of the Quasar Corps' administrator and Melanie soon began working on the side for them by researching the Earth's mutations.
Main canon event
It was the peak of the Invading that year. Melanie was working in one of QRKS's labs alongside Julio on one of the higher floors of the building. It seemed like it was going to be another normal work day until an irregular noise began to sound outside followed by a loud explosion. One of the mutations had crashed into a plaza a few blocks away. Immediately, the building went into evacuation mode during which another mutation crashed right into the lab the two were in moments ago, causing a fire to ignite. The two became separated in the chaos.

When they crossed paths again, Julio sprinting down the hall in Melanie's direction but was halted when falling ignited debris blocked his path. Melanie ran to clear the way only for more debris fall, this time directly on Julio. As a coworker stepped in get Melanie out, he watched Julio begin to burn to death until he was out of his line of sight.

Days after the incident, Julio's body was not found and was presumed to have been cremated by the fire. Melanie quit QRKS and became a full time researcher for the Quasar Corps in an attempt to find a way to rid Earth of mutations and avenge their friend's death.
Becoming Spider-Man
Melanie hits a road block in his research and requests a meeting with the admin to propose sending him to Earth. When he's denied, he opts to devise a secret plan to go by himself. He ends up stealing a spacesuit and a shuttle from the launch bay with JAY's help.

When they arrive on Earth, they initially don't find any mutations until they stumble upon a crater with an entire colony. The two wonder why the area was never mentioned before in any reports from previous research groups sent to Earth. As Melanie is about to take a picture on his holo-camera for evidence purposes, he notices a small mutation on his hand just as it bites him and its venom begins to corrupt his DNA. He casually swats the creature off and accidentally sets off his camera's flash, alerting the colony below of his intruding presence. After a chase back to the shuttle while fending off the swarm, Melanie accidentally blasts a hole in the shuttle's interior, causing the engine to malfunction and send them crashing back down.

Upon regaining consciousness, Melanie finds his helmet cracked open, but he can breathe just fine. Deep rumbles interrupt his thoughts as a mutation that's many stories tall approaches the crash site and he rushes to hide. Somehow, it doesn't seem to sense their presence and it soon leaves as soon as it came. Things become more bizarre when he finds black ooze dripping from his now pointy fingertips. Melanie has more questions than he thought he would have and knows he can only hope for answers once he returns to the Moon, although he knows that would also mean facing reprocussions.

Once the dispatched rescue team finds him and returns him back to the Corps' base, the admin fires him for defying his decision and for becoming "infected". Intuition tells Melanie not to show him what powers he's gained. The admin lets him keep the suit he stole as he doesn't want to risk contamination within the Corps.

Having grown bored with his new job as a barista, Melanie decides to use his powers to help out the city. He redesigns his dusty stolen spacesuit he had hidden away, adding new features to accomodate his unnatural abilities and begins his new side-job as Spider-Man.
The Space Oddity
Melanie had unknowingly caught the attention of a young Miguel O'Hara at the time of Julio's death. According to the canon, Julio was supposed to be Earth-3142's Spider-Man, yet he was killed despite no external interference. What was more confusing was that the universe never ended up collapsing. Melanie's web of reality unexpectedly grew to replace Julio's original web. Miguel took note of this phenomenon, labelling it a "space oddity" rather than an anomaly and began to research its potential causes.
Family of my own
A few years into playing superhero in Nova York, Melanie crosses paths with the Black Cat. The two start a long rivalry over miscommunication: Melanie thinks she's a run-of-the-mill villain, Felicia thinks her father's hired him to catch her. Out of costumes, the two have a meet-cute at the coffee shop Melanie works at not soon after and things build from there.

Well into dating, the two find their mutual sudden disappearances and tardiness getting harder and harder to ignore. When Felicia finds Melanie's helmet hidden under his bed, her suspicious are finally solidfied. The two come clean and realize how detrimental it could be for Melanie's role as hero if it was revealed that he was involved with what the public thought was a threat to their peace. The two agreed to be careful to only continue their relationship when they were off the field.

By the time Melanie proposed to Felicia, they had already made plans to adopt. After tons of paperwork and preparing, they introduced their few months old daughter Sara into their small family. In public, the two continued their rivalry just to keep up appearances. However, it didn't take long for Felicia's father to get dangerously close to finding her as she was returning to Melanie's apartment one night. Things worsened when she caught word that her father had plans to kill the Black Cat the day he finally catches her.

Felicia's shrinking bubble of safety led to her returning her engagement ring to Melanie. She couldn't guarantee she could keep up their secret, let alone promise her family's security in her situation. With a heavy heart and an established mutual agreement, Felicia took their daughter with her to the lower levels and left Melanie behind with no point of contact to ensure no traces of their relationship could be found. A deep loneliness Melanie hadn't felt since his childhood found him once again.

To this day, Melanie does not know what became of Felicia or their child.
Right-hand man
Melanie first crossed paths with Miguel after a fight with his universe's Vulture. While searching through the rubble of a parking garage, Melanie's sensors picked up Miguel's presence as he warped into his reality. Melanie immediately questions him to which Miguel explains that he has come to recruit him into the Spider Society.

At the time, HQ was becoming too crowded and Miguel had decided to start expanding his base of operations to different areas of Nueva York to help alleviate some of the burden. The Space Station for the Society was more than half-way built by this point and he intended to have Melanie run this sector as he was more than qualified. Melanie accepted on the condition that he could run the Space Station his own way and make decisions without Miguel's approval, which sparked a brief argument between the two. A settlement was soon reached: Melanie could do whatever he wanted within the pre-established rules of the Society, only Miguel could choose the potential recruits for Melanie to interview, and Miguel needed to be granted access to the Space Station's system when requested.

Miguel's contrasting personality to Melanie's started their professional relationship as co-leaders off to a rocky start. All recruits know they only pretend to stand each other's presence in public to provide everyone else with a sense of stability.

Behind closed doors, things are different. Melanie enjoys pestering and annoying Miguel whenever he finds the chance...which is often. All they can do is grin and bear each other's existence, especially during their one-on-one meetings.

  • Melanie is technically an alien since he was born on the Moon.
  • His last name is a reference to quinones.
  • He has a bachelor's in astrobiology and a master's in physics.
  • In addition to speaking English and Spanish, he also speaks some Nawat.
  • Has never seen an ocean/beach and is very afraid of them.
  • His earrings and some of their functionalities were inspired by the Jemstar earrings.
  • Melanie's character was created with the idea of acting as both the parallel and opposite of Miguel O'Hara.
  • The "scarf" he wears is actually a backup mask that's worn instead of the helmet in low oxygen conditions.
  • His helmet has a built-in voice modulator to mask his identity when on missions, similar to the modulators in the Prowler suits of Earth-1610B's Aaron Davis and Earth-42's Miles Morales.
  • He got the scar on the left side of his mouth after going into full Singularity mode for longer than he should've years ago. He ended up splitting part of his cheek open. After this accident, Melanie swore only to push his limits again as a last recourse.
  • Melanie snapped off the inner points of his earrings because they kept poking his face. He liked the jagged cracks left behind so he didn't bother repairing them beyond sealing the circuitry back up.
