It’s time to combine.

Backloggd February 2025 Developer Update

As the month wraps up I want to share progress on what’s been cooking for the 1.14 update. There will be a lot to cover so let’s jump right into what will be the Game Edition Combining update.

The top most voted roadmap feature is finally coming with a slew of logging changes! Migrating editions is no easy feat as there are a lot of considerations on what counts as an edition, how is logging affected, how to handle case-by-case situations, etc..

So let’s tackle a couple of big questions first.

What will combining change?

The goal with combining game editions is that it will reduce stats being fragmented across many games and clutter when searching / logging. So the following changes will apply when a game becomes a game edition.

  • Editions cannot be individually logged, must be logged via the parent game
  • Ratings will be averaged across all editions and displayed on the parent game’s page (ideally with a way to see a breakdown for the parent and editions)
  • Reviews & logs from editions will appear on the parent game’s page (ideally with filters)
  • Search results will nest editions under its parent game
  • Editions will not appear in autocomplete, will suggest the parent game
  • Editions will not appear in a user’s game collection as its own game (maybe will have an optional toggle to display editions separately)
  • Editions can be liked and used in lists as separate games
  • Editions will not count towards personal stats (unless there are edition specific stats)
  • Editions will still have their own page with only ratings, reviews, and logs from that edition, but logging opens the editor for the parent game

These rules are a work-in-progress and I open them to feedback as I’m sure there are use cases I’ve missed!

What games will be editions?

There is no easy answer, at least not with how complicated game categorizing is. Automating this effort is the main goal, with some manual intervention expected. The first category to combine will be game versions. These are the most obvious and will be a good test run before further combinations.

Game version examples:

1.14’s initial launch will only combine game versions with a deeper dive into how remasters, bundles, and ports could work next. These categories vary more case-by-case and might need special treatment before merging them all.

How will logging change?

So game editions aren’t just going away, instead they’ll be loggable via the parent game as a new field to specify which edition you played. Here’s a work-in-progress view of the full log editor:

While some UI elements have been rearranged, this is still largely the same editor with a couple new features. Here you can see that I’m specifying for this playthrough I played Halo 3: Limited Edition version of Halo 3. So instead of going to the Halo 3: Limited Edition page, I’m now logging it under Halo 3.

Additionally you’ll be able to specify which edition you own in your library for more accurate collection tracking.

I’m also using this redesign as an excuse to improve the time tracking system. For example, you’ll soon be able to specify how long it took to finish a game and 100% complete it. Ideally this will be the first step to displaying how long it takes to finish a game!

There are quite a few UI changes but I want reassure that everything you can do now will still be possible with these changes. I’m hoping this new tab system will streamline features you enjoy while allowing enthusiasts to expand their options with more choices.

Right now I’m only working on the full log editor but I’ll soon be considering what comes to the quick editor and mobile.

How many new features did you spot in the new screenshots 😉

As you can see, game edition combining is going to be a big one! There’s still a lot more for me to do but I’ll be sharing updates along the way. Be sure to send me your feedback / ideas as I’m still fine-tuning how it’ll all work. And if you enjoyed this update, be sure to check out the Backloggd Patreon as many of these features were already revealed weeks ago 😁

See you next time!
