Removal of global IP block exempt for Pine
- Global user: Pine (edits (alt) • CA • global groups • crossactivity • verify 2FA)
I previously requested a global IPBE here. To make a long story short, I might not need this any more. I thought that a policy says that IPBEs are intended to be temporary although I can't quickly find that particular statement now that I'm looking for it. In an attempt to make myself compliant with the policy, please remove the global IPBE for the time being. I will request that it be added back if I have trouble editing after the global IPBE is removed. Stwards Vituzzu and Trijnstel were involved in my original request so I am pinging them to notify them of this status change. Thanks, --Pine✉ 05:53, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Pine: you don't need to give up the flag if you still need it. No harm in indefinite access. But, if you still want it removed, let me know and I can do that. Ajraddatz (talk) 07:33, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
- Ajraddatz it's a nice convenience to have the flag so if it's ok by policy to keep it then I'm happy to keep it, but I want to make sure that I'm abiding by the policies for having the flag. If it would be more efficient for stewards to let me keep the flag than to add and remove it as needed, then I'll keep it. --Pine✉ 20:02, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Global rename for Boing! said Zebedee
- Wiki: meta.wikimedia.org (list 'crats • bot policy • summary • 'crats rights)
- User: Boing! said Zebedee (talk • edits • logs • UserRights • activity • CentralAuth • email • verify 2FA)
I'm an admin on en.wiki, and after a break from it I'm back to common tasks like reviewing unblock requests - and that includes "unblock for rename" requests. Currently I can only unblock, and then a separate rename request is needed - and I think the two-stage process can be confusing for new users (who are faced with what can be a daunting set of rules). Now with global accounts and global rename and Arbs (embarassing mistake) Bureaucrats not needed for rename, it has been suggested here that admins who routinely patrol unblock requests should apply for global renamer, and I think that would simplify things for new users and reduce the two-part workload. I'd use it only (see below) for unblock/rename requests made on en.wiki.
- I hope you don't mind a few additional comments on the local vs global issue. As I see it, individual projects used to have their own ability to rename users (it was reserved for bureaucrats on en.wiki - I don't know about others). But since we moved to a unified login (which, I think, is a very good thing) we have naturally lost the ability to do local renames. As such, I'm simply asking to be able to use the new mechanism for doing renames for en.wiki users. I really don't see this as controversial, and I see no detriment to Wikipedia/Wikimedia if I only use the right to rename users on en.wiki. The alternative, that to be allowed to rename users one would need to be multilingual and active on multiple projects (even if many admins only speak one language and only want to work on one Wikipedia), would seem to me to be to the detriment of all the individual projects which are mostly administered by local-only admins. I am, of course, open to any questions. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 09:53, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

per Steinsplitter. This is not a vote of distrust to Boing!, but the global renamer role was created to help all users seeking a rename independently of the project and end the crazyness of having to request dozens of renames everywhere. If Boing! were also keen to help out in other kind of requests that come via the global-rename-queue, I may reconsider, but getting the GRename tool to become sort of local bureaucrats again is not appropriate IMHO. Thanks. —MarcoAurelio 10:28, 21 January 2016 (UTC)- If there are other things I could do with the tool then yes, sure, I'd be happy to help with them - but it would have to be English-language only, as I'm a typical Brit with an embarrassing ignorance of other languages (I can read menus and road signs in a couple of languages, but that's about it). Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 13:59, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

- Comment Just wanted to put it out there that, while "cross-wikiness" is definitely important for this position, it's also quite difficult to draw a line between what is "very active crosswiki" and what is "very localized". Remember that I started out in the renaming process as a clerk for w:en:WP:CHUS, and that was very localized, yet here I am with the global renamer tools. I say that the most important trait we should look for in new GRs is a high sense of competency, and knowledge in the SUL system. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 22:12, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
- Support Candidate is asking for the right for the same reasons I did. I am willing to bet that in most cases, users blocked as a username violation on enwiki have little if any activity on other wikis. Namaste everyone, I would like to apply for global renamer flag to abet the communities. I would like to help Nepali, Maithili, Hindi and Bhojpuri speaking users here and also at local request pages. - Oppose Concerned about users experience. Looking at his commons talkpage and talkpage archive i see a lot of warnings about controversial edits (and likely not relevant here: copyvios). I see no x-wiki experience and never seen involved him in global-renamer tasks. Of course the user is sysop in two small wikis (The user has around ~4000 edits in maiwiki and around 7000 in newiki but i see only a few adminactions there). Unfortunately, i can't support the request at this time. I am happy to support a request for global rename access in the future if the user has gained more experience. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:47, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
