Editing contest The Women You Have Never Met 2017
From March 4 to April 9, 2017, the Iberocoop network is holding an editing contest titled The Women You Have Never Met . This initiative, taking place during Women's History Month and supported by the Iberocoop network, was first organized in 2015 and 2016 with a total of 1,700 articles edited.
But for the 2017 edition, We want the proposal to go global!
We want to invite all Wikimedia user groups and chapters to join the contest, with the primary objective to improve women's content on Wikipedia, taking quality into account.
Are you getting interested?
The contest has clearly defined its objectives as follows:
- Improving content on Wikipedia related to women. We understand this also as all content related to women's organizations and feminist movements that might help the academic construction of feminism on Wikipedia.
- Improving the quality of Wikipedia by incorporating gender perspective. The purpose of Wikipedia should not be just how much new knowledge we make accessible, but how. The gender gap is present in Wikipedia, which in many cases reproduces sexist patterns. Reproducing these patterns settles them into the thousands of users of the project.
How to edit including the gender perspective in Wikipedia?[edit]
During the last two years, the Iberocoop network has been organizing this contest. Beyond the quantity of new articles created, we have been working on increasing the quality of new articles added. In this sense, Iberocoop has set a few gender indicators to establish a greater gender perspective in the Spanish Wikipedia. These can be summed up as follows:
- Title: name the woman by her first name and last name. Avoid the married name if she is known professionally by her maiden name.
- Avoid defining women compared to men: the reference as a woman, being a wife or daughter should appear in the section of her biography, never in the introduction. The introduction in the articles should describe the contributions, activities and professional achievements avoiding to mention her gender or marital status.
- Avoid using the term "wife of" and introduce concepts such as "husband and wife", "companion and companion" etc. According to the circumstances. We can say, for example, that "the woman is married to" rather than using the term "woman of".
- Avoid the use of the term "female" in the description of the woman. It is not necessary to say "woman writer" when "writer" already includes gender.
- Avoid using diminutives such as "Amalita" or "Anita". We name women by their last name as in the biographies of men.
- In articles, avoid using images of her husband, father, or family, unless it is strictly necessary and adds quality to the article. These images do not represent the singularity of the woman and do not add quality information to the article.
However, not all the Wikipedias follow the same editing rules. Including the gender perspective, then, differs depending on the language. Next, you can add those issues that you consider necessary to include the gender perspective in the different Wikipedias, as follows:
Doing...
- Title: name women by their current or final professional names. Avoid their married names if they are known professionally by their maiden names.
- Avoid defining women compared to men: referencing them as wives and daughters should only occur in the biography section and be worded the same way it is worded with men, rather than being in the lead. The lead should describe their contributions, activities and professional achievements, avoiding to mention their gender or marital status.
- Avoid using the term "the wife of" and introduce concepts such as "husband and wife," "partners" or "companions" etc. where applicable. We can say, for example, that "she is married to" rather than using the term "she is the wife of."
- Avoid gender-specific terms in the description of the woman's profession or trade. It is not necessary to say "woman writer" or "poetess" when her gender will be indicated in various other ways, such as pronouns.
- Avoid using diminutives such as "Annie" or "Becky" unless these are part of her professional name, in which case they usually need not appear outside the lead. Throughout the article, apart from the lead, name women by their professional last name as is done in the biographies of men.
- In articles, avoid using images of husbands, fathers, or family, unless it is strictly necessary and adds quality to the article. These images generally ignore women's individuality without adding important information to the article.
At the global level, the Iberocoop network is responsible for:
- Get the distinctive logo of the project for 2017
- Coordinate the work and the preparation of the proposal in the different contexts with the local organizations
- Be the contact point to any questions about the contest
- Organize a jury at the international level
- Awards at the international level
At the local level, local organizing entities undertake:
- Organize a page on Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia project they consider to place the contest
- Address the doubts of your local community
- Organize a jury to review the articles edited at the local level
- Prizes at the local level
- Represent the proposal locally
It's very easy!
We are looking for leaders of the initiative at the international level, with the aim of organizing the contest in each local context.
To do this, add in the corresponding place your name, organization, contact information and location so that we can contact you. The objective is to have at least one person leading the proposal for each country interested in being part of it.
