Yan Mikirtumov
Yan Mikirtumov was born in Moscow (Russia) in 1974. He started studying music at the age of 5 at Moscow Estate Choir College of A. Sveshnikov. In 1997 he finished his Master degree as a Choir conductor, singer and teacher in Academy of Choral Art in Moscow, where he studied with V. Popov (conducting) and Mikhail Arkadiev (piano). In 1997/1998 he took the composition course in Moscow Conservatory with R. Ledenev, G. Dimitriev, V. Agafonnikov. Doctor of Music and Musicology by University of Évora (2013) with thesis “Piano reduction: Three specificities”.
Since 1989 he started his performing work as a singer, choir conductor and a pianist. He has participated in concert tours and recording in Europe and North America, worked with baroque music ensembles and drama - theatres in Russia.
Since 1999 he works and lives in Portugal where he works as a music teacher, accompanist and a composer. He has founded his own children choir in Albufeira and his quartet "Con´tradição" which performs his own music. Yan Mikirtumov has collaborated as a conductor with Lisbon Opera Theatre in the work of the opera "Boris Godunov" of M. Mussorgsky. His choir represented Portugal in France, Germany, Greece, Austria and Spain on Festivals of Youth Choirs. He has recorded and participates in recordings of more than 50 CD´s as a conductor, composer, pianist-accompanist and producer including recordings label Melodya, Dargil, Universal, Russian Estate Radio & Television, NDR (Germany) and Antena2 (Portugal). He was a President (2012) and member of jury at Freamunde International Choir Competition (2010, 2014).
He collaborates with various musical entities such as: the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Gulbenkian Foundation, the Portuguese National Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Cascais and Oeiras, the Classical Orchestra of the South, The Madeira Classical Orchestra, Sinfonieta Kriola, Eborae Music, Estoril Interpretation Competition among others. His arrangements and compositions were commissioned by orchestras, chamber music groups and soloists in Portugal, Spain, Romania, Finland and Russia. He participated in several projects in Cape Verde and Angola, among which exclusive arrangements and orchestrations for Tito Paris & Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra Project. Some of his works were edited by publishers "Copy-us" (Germany), AvA Musical Edition (Portugal) and Ricordi (Germany).
Currently, he is a professor at the National Academy of Orchestra in Lisbon, the University of Évora and Jean Piaget University.
