Drawing on ideas expressed by M.M. Bakhtin and Yu.M. Lotman, the authors see Other as a key actor of written communication in the academic community and aim to describe the specifics of verbalizing Other’s presence in academic discourse as compared to fiction genres. The empirical basis of the study is constituted by a corpus of research papers written by Russian linguists and published over the period of 1991 through 2012 as part of the Logical Analysis of Language series edited by N.D. Arutyunova. In the initial stage of the research the corpus was used as a source of language data featuring contexts indicative of omnipresent Other. The second stage consisted in semantic analysis of language samples followed by cognitive interpretation and relied both on present-day linguistic theories and recent research in psychology. The paper focuses on identifying and methodizing key strategies and ways of rendering culture spe... more The paper focuses on identifying and methodizing key strategies and ways of rendering culture specific information in Portuguese translations of Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin and aims at assessing their adequacy. Culture differences between Russia, Portugal, and Brazil provide grounds for cross-cultural barriers, the negative effect of which could be minimized if translation bridges the gap between the source and target cultural worlds. This research relies on culture specific lexical items known as ‘realia’ to examine how culture code is transferred in Russian-to-Portuguese translation of fiction. The study resulted in a new translation model providing an algorithm for rendering culture specific words. The model uses a complex of criteria that allow assessing equivalence and adequacy of items in the target language to those in the source language. Applying the model in the course of Russian-to-Portuguese translation will advance theoretically motivated decisions and contribute...
The paper explores recent changes in standards, forms and practices of teaching foreign languages... more The paper explores recent changes in standards, forms and practices of teaching foreign languages in the present-day Russia against the system that existed in the Soviet period. A combination of theoretical and empirical methods and research practices are used to demonstrate that the changes were for the best, although most of them were not results of well-balanced state policy meeting new education goals. The research suggests that the current boom in learning foreign languages in Russia is mostly due to the new political, ideological, social and economic climate in the country. The nature and extent of influence produced by external factors on the course content, goals, expected results, teaching methods and resources are further discussed.

The study is based on one of the key postulates of anthropological linguistics stating that dynamic changes in human mentality, cultural developments and newly accumulated knowledge find their reflection in the lexical subsystem of the language. Relying on the concept of phraseology as a fragment of linguistic reality bearing an information-intensive map of the national world view and the type of linguistic identity, the paper examines phraseological units verbalizing fundamental memory processes of encoding, storing, remembering and forgetting and offers a linguacultural perspective on the specifics of representing individual memory processes in English phraseology. The paper focuses on lexical means of representing Russian cultural code in Portuguese translatio... more The paper focuses on lexical means of representing Russian cultural code in Portuguese translations of A.S. Pushkin’s renowned novel “Eugene Onegin” authored by Dário Moreira de Castro Alves (2008) and Alípio Correia de Franca Neto and Elena Vássina (2019). Specifically, the study examines techniques used by the translators to render culturally marked Russian words into Portuguese. The objective of the study was to determine how Russian realia expressing national cultural practices are reflected in the mirror of the Portuguese linguistic community culture and identify relevant factors affecting translation choices in both versions of the novel. As Portuguese translations of “Eugene Onegin” are relatively new to the global cultural landscape, they become a legitimate interest as an object of comparative analysis in the context of Russian-Brazilian intercultural communication. To conduct the investigation, a parallel Russian-Portuguese corpus was compiled that included fragments containing culturally marked words. The research procedure relied on a set of methods developed for a step-by-step comparative analysis of Russian realia and their Portuguese equivalents registered in the parallel corpus compiled by the authors. The findings suggest that the translators approach the problem of rendering Russian realia from different angles, occasionally displaying antipodal decisions regarding translation strategies. Both versions are not devoid of culturally inappropriate choices of equivalents, which may become an obstacle to adequate perception of the Russian novel by Brazilian readers.

While previous research focused mainly on narratives as verbal representations of memories, the current study presents a novel view based on the communicative approach. The author argues that results obtained in the course of experimental studies do not reflect the reality as participants report their memories in the manner and under the circumstances prescribed by the experiment framework. The present paper examines linguistic forms representing individuals’ memories on the basis of empirical data illustrating natural communication in various situations. Having accepted the concept of language as a material container of cognitive content and the thesis about the patterned nature of communication, the author proposes hypotheses about a standard set of linguistic forms employed by speakers for recall reports and a certain correlation between the cognitive-c...
The paper discusses potential prospects of expanding the official limits of contemporary language... more The paper discusses potential prospects of expanding the official limits of contemporary language theory as to bring into its focus phenomena syncretically connected with the language and speech faculty but formally standing outside the linguistic field of study. Specifically, the author raises the question of legitimizing the area of linguistic research dealing with studies of verbal representation of memory, mnemonic phenomena and memorial practices. The emergence of linguistic memory studies as a new discipline is in line with the present-day vibrant research in humanities and agrees with prime trends in cognitive science. The paper states that integrating various studies of memory as a linguocognitive system of organizing personal and collective experience into a common framework could homogenize results achieved in different fields and lay a solid foundation for future advances. It is suggested that linguistic memory studies should rely upon the cognitive-communicative paradigm...

The paper provides a review of distance interpreting programs available online and focuses on a particular case of adjusting an on-campus course in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting to online instruction. Preliminary results highlight technical and didactic specifics of teaching an online course in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting and make prominent pros and cons of online student teamwork. Drawing from the case study, the authors discuss possible solutions for online interpreter training.
