normally stuff like this feels performative because anyone can talk shit online to someone and most normal people would just ignore it and block you but in this instance its the funniest thing in the world because you know for a fact its getting to him
So there’s a criticism about the DMC Netlfix show that’s making me raise an eyebrow. Apparently because the US military started bombing and occupying Hell in the last episode, people are claiming that the theme of the show is that humanity was the true evil all along.
I can see one making that argument if you think about it for maybe half a second, but the moment you ponder it any longer than that, it’s clear that humanity in full is not the one being portrayed as morally vile. It’s the US government. Among the most inhumane systems in the world. To claim that this is meant to represent all of humanity is to suggest that the US and it’s militant, imperialistic nature IS humanity at it’s core. And, sorry, but that’s very western lenses of you.
Now you can certainly argue that creating a narrative that is clearly meant to resemble the Bush Administration’s fuckery in the middle east is dampened by the fact that the invaded people are literally demons. Creatures you’ve spent all the Devil May Cry games doing sick combos on. That is much more direct, focused criticism that is worth discussing. My takeaway on it is, while certainly clumsy, I can see it coming around in season 2. It’s clearly setting up the US Military/Ouroboros vs Mundus and has the potential to create a nuanced narrative out of that.
Namely how the heads of these two expansionist superpowers are killing innocents by the cartloads and sending their own to die in droves just so the people on top can scrounge a little more power for themselves. And it will only stop when the people of those factions decide that it stops and turn to fight the people at the very top. Like Sparda did once upon a time. I have no doubt that this show will end with Dante and co. going up against Ouroboros and Mundus and getting earth and the demon realm to chill the fuck out and leave each other alone.

Amity, I’ve decided would be Ventrue. While she did go through a lot of character work that would keep her from being like Lacroix or other Ventrue, she does still have a penchant for being on the top, as seen in scenes as late as season 3
