This often leads to malnutrition and other health issues (Perez, 2013, as cited in Tuasikal, 2019). Integrating gastro-colonialism as a social justice theme in children’s literature is a potent means to raise awareness among young readers (Ismail, 2023) and their families about complex societal issues (Harrington, 2016), particularly concerning Indigenous cultures like those in Papua. By presenting this topic in a child-friendly format, literature allows young audiences to examine how food systems and cultural practices are shaped by external forces, bringing attention to justice, autonomy, and artistic preservation.

Re... more This paper discusses a preschool student's encounters with risky materials using their bodies. Recent research highlights adults’ preconceived notions regarding children’s bodily capabilities, often viewing them as incapable and in constant need of adult assistance (Antonsen, 2018; Hackett & Rautio, 2019). These views have led to policies reinforcing children's safety and well-being by limiting their bodily exploration. However, Quiñones (2023) emphasises the pivotal role of adults in facilitating children’s exploration of risky materials, which benefits their development. Materiality influences how children play and fosters risk-taking behaviours through the characteristics of objects and their subjective use (Berge, 2019; Taguchi, 2011). Discussions with children about their material encounters also offer valuable insights into their learning processes (Yuniasih et al., 2020). This article aims to understand how children explore risky materials using their bodies to foster risk-taking behaviours.

Most children today demonstrate adeptness in navigating digital tools. This pushes preschools to integrate digital devices into classrooms and incorporate them into the curriculum (ABC News, 2016). Although digital tools are recommended in early years settings, they pose some dilemmas. Educators like Jane struggle with the dilemma of how digital tools can be used to support children’s learning in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) while simultaneously being required to create meaningful learning activities. While this presents a very complex situation in utilising digital tools, as they surround children, our knowledge as teachers is often inadequate to optimise their use. This essay will explore how educators like Jane and I can use digital tools to support STEAM learning in early childhood.

Despite STEM's introduction into the national curriculum since 2013, challenges persist, especially in preschool (Farwati et al., 2021). Teachers and parents face hurdles due to a lack of pedagogical knowledge in STEM education (Margorini & Rini, 2019; Stohlmann et al., 2012). There is an evident gap between Indonesia and Western children literature when it comes to STEM storybook availability. To provide young children with an early introduction to STEM, it is essential to incorporate STEM storybooks within moral narratives, ensuring that they benefit from these resources for their future development to acquire knowledge from STEM-related books (Cardullo & Burton, 2022). By addressing the availability of STEM storybooks, enhancing pedagogical knowledge, and developing high quality storybooks, we can bridge the existing gap between moral narratives and STEM education in early childhood, thereby cultivating inquisitive young learners.
