Sistem nengō telah digunakan sejak akhir kurun ke-7. Sistem ini ialah suatu sistem dimana tahun pemerintahan dikira menggunakan era nama Jepun ,apabila bermulanya era nengō.[2]
Susunan dan tarikh 28 Mahajara Jepun yang pertama, terutamanya dari yang pertama sehingga ke-16, adalah berdasarkan sistem era nama Jepun. [3]
