Prof. Attila PÓK is deputy director of the Institute of History at the Research Centre for Humanities of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, vice-president of the Hungarian Historical Association, senior researcher of the Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg, recurring Visiting Professor of History at Columbia University in New York. The paper is a revised version of the first in a series of twelve lectures on Hungarian history a... more The paper is a revised version of the first in a series of twelve lectures on Hungarian history at the University of Vienna, starting on October 5, 2017. It discusses some key issues of Hungarian history around the theme of continuities and discontinuities. Namely, a particular dynamism of Hungarian history derives from the incongruence between the historical narrative of the Hungarian state and the historical narrative of the Hungarian nation for extended periods during the last thousand years. The survey addresses political, social, economic and cultural aspects of Hungarian history and concludes by arguing that the adoption of Christianity and the foundation of the Hungarian state by the first king, Saint Stephen, are the longest-lasting achievements of Hungarian history, properly commemorated by the most important national holiday on August 20.

The article is dedicated to the analyses of interpretations of the events that led to the burst o... more The article is dedicated to the analyses of interpretations of the events that led to the burst out of reform processes in Central Europe 30 years before, in 1989-1990. The author stresses that with the passing of time the focus of digging into the fertile soil of the bottomless depth of the past keeps shifting: political developments, environmental issues, great cultural achievements alike can mark major turning points in the narrations of global regional, national, local pasts. Events of the past can be turned into historical narratives in numerous forms. The guild of historians have their own rules, the performance of politicians in dealing with the past is judged by the support they can gain in their fight for power. Among the major questions of investigation are: what happened in the world, in Europe, in the countries of the Soviet Bloc, in Hungary three decades ago? When does the process that led to the termination of the bipolar world, to the fall of European communist regimes, to the restructuring of power relations from the global to the East Central European local levels begin? How can one define the driving forces of changes and what could be considered to be the most important longer term consequences? He is trying to give a concise summary of some international and Hungarian interpretations of the transition process in Eastern and Central Europe, making also an attempt at pointing out the impact of the interpretations on the process itself.

The Hungarians and the Finns have had very few direct contacts in the historical past. These peop... more The Hungarians and the Finns have had very few direct contacts in the historical past. These people have, however, shared a similar position in that they have both belonged to a group of small and medium-sized nations lying in a zone between East and West, which has sometimes been called "Europe Between". Despite the considerable differences between the two societies, it may be instructive to compare them. This was the basis for a dialogue between Hungarian and Finnish historians which began in the early 1980s, and it has provided the starting point for a number of conferences held in both countries. The present work is based on papers given at a conference arranged in Helsinki in 1998. Studying the history of twentieth-century Eastern and Central European political thought, one oft... more Studying the history of twentieth-century Eastern and Central European political thought, one often comes across a basic stereotype that is common to both liberals and conservatives, communists and Fascists, nationalists and cosmopolitans, as well as to the ideologists of ruling and oppositional parties of Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, Romanians, Bulgarians, Croats, Serbs, and Slovenians. When they are trying to explain the defeats, losses, failures, and sufferings of their respective nations in the course of the centuries, they often make an attempt at blaming influential personalities, smaller or larger social groups (layers, classes) or even non-personal factors (such as ideologies, traditions, or prejudices). Whether these explanations take the form of detailed analyses, or very superficial argumentation, or even merely occasional cursory remarks, the result is often the same: the identification of a scapegoat. This paper will make an attempt at examining the peculiarities of Eastern and Central European scapegoating on the basis of a case study of one of the greatest national tragedies in Hungarian history: the collapse of the Hungarian state in the aftermath of World War I, which entailed the loss of two thirds of the country's territory and about forty percent of the Hungarian ethnic population. The justification for the choice of this topic lies not only in my own historical interests but also in several more current experiences. Since the "annus mirabilis" of 1989 and for the first time after many decades (or even centuries) most of the peoples of the region can indeed try to enjoy self-determination and sovereignty. However, the scope of action for these small nations is limited by numerous external and internal factors, and they will experience many more failures than they might have expected. Declining living standards, widespread corruption, the lack of substantial economic and political (or sometimes even moral, not to speak of military) aid from the "West" and the lack of a true, promising vision of the future make one ponder about the causes of these problems. All too often clear-cut, monocausal explanations are being demanded. Furthermore, social cohesion must also be strengthened and, as we shall see in a minute, both needs can be satisfied with the help of scapegoats. In difficult, critical situations

A francia forradalom a franciáknak, Hitler náci birodalma a németeknek, Rigómezô a szerbeknek, Fehérhegy a cseheknek, a felosztások a lengyeleknek, Gyulafehérvár a románoknak s így tovább. Olyan kulcsfontosságú események, amelyek a történelmükkel foglalkozás minden lehetséges szintjén megkerülhetetlenek. Szakmai kihívások a történész számára, retorikai alapelemek a politikusi közbeszédben, a közösségi kohézió építésének épí tôelemei az oktatásban, nagymama és unoka beszélgetésének témái a társadalmi közemlékezetben. A múlt sokfajta módon válik történelemmé s kevés divatosabb téma van ma a szakmánkban, mint e folyamat sajátosságainak vizsgálata. Aligha kérdôjelezi meg bárki, hogy a huszadik századi magyar történelemben ez a viszonyítási pont Trianon, sôt talán úgy is fogalmazhatnánk, hogy a történelmi értelemben vett jelen Trianonnal és közvetlen elôtörténetével kezdôdik nemzeti és állami történelmünkben. A nemzeti és állami létet befolyásoló kárpát-medencei, európai és globális nemzetközi viszonyokban, a társadalomszerkezetben, a politikai kultúra alakulásában mai problémáink eredôit keresve elôbb-utóbb akaratlanul mindig ide jutunk vissza. Az elmúlt fél évszázad igen gazdag kutatási ter mésétôl függetlenül mai közemlékezetünkben leginkább Trianon közvetlen elôtör ténete részeként jelenik meg a Tanácsköztársaság. Szakmánk számára négy évtizede a Tanácsköztársaság számos forrás alapján érdemben kutatott szaktudományos téma, bár a legutóbbi években kevés kolléga választja témául.

It points out that two parallel narratives, the history of the Hungarian state and the history of the Hungarian nation for extended periods during the last 1000 years do not overlap and this fact gives a particular dynamism to this national history. A progresszió értelmezéseinek változásairól A tanulm ány abból az 1960-as-70-es évek fordulójáig ... more A progresszió értelmezéseinek változásairól A tanulm ány abból az 1960-as-70-es évek fordulójáig közkeletű nézetből indul ki, amely szerint nem kétséges, hogy m erre van előre: a történelem nem ciklikus körforgás, hanem teleologikus folyamat, a cél a felvilágosodás értékeinek (szabadság, egyenlőség, szolidaritás, műveltség, tudás) minél nagyobb körben, minél nagyobb m érték ben történő térnyerésének elősegítése. Áttekinti e paradigm a változásának okait, amelynek eredményeként a történészek m eghatározó többsége m a úgy gondolja, hogy az újragondolt történeti tudás nem a folytonos tökéletesedés útján halad, a m últtól a jövő felé h a ladva ism ereteink a m agunk m ögött hagyott m últról nem tökéletesednek, hanem a történészek pusztán a folyam a tos újraértelmezésekkel vannak elfoglalva. A tanulm ány megkérdőjelezi ezt a nézetet: ha általában és globálisan mai világunkban nehezen is értelm ezhető a progresszió, a haladás fogalm a, konkrét esetek elem zésében, a múlt értelm ezéseit is m agában foglaló döntéshelyzetekben, etikailag is form ált társadalm i felelősséggel élő értelm iségi ként aligha m ellőzhetjük a fogalom használatát.

Néhány gondolat folyamatosságról és megszakítottságról a II. világháború utáni magyar történettudományban

Az előadás arra a kérdésre keres választ, hogy a magyar történettudomány második világháború után... more Az előadás arra a kérdésre keres választ, hogy a magyar történettudomány második világháború utáni történetében a politikai fordulatok milyen mértékben befolyásolták a szaktudomány intézményhálózatának, személyi állományának, kérdésfeltevéseinek, nemzetközi szakmai és magyar társadalmi visszhangjának alakulását. Az előzmények rövid áttekintése után 1949-et jelöli meg a "fordulat" évének. A függetlenségi törekvések és az osztályharc, az "elnyomott osztályok" történetének előtérbe állítása sematikus propagandaművek mellett máig értékesnek tartott eredményeket hozott a parasztság történetének kutatásában és lehetővé tette a magyar kapitalizmus története feltárásának megkezdését. Az erre épülő gazdaságtörténeti iskola hozott az 1960-as évek közepétől kezdődően nemzetközi elismertséget a magyar történettudomány számára. A politikatörténeti kutatásokat sajátos módon az a politikai értékelés lendítette előre, amely a "reakciós nacionalizmus" szerepét emelte ki az 1956-os "ellenforradalom" okai között. A politikus-történész Molnár Erik nevével fémjelzett vita során a nemzeti függetlenségi törekvések és az osztályküzdelmek viszonyát vizsgálva számos értékálló elemzés készült, többek között a Habsburg-magyar viszonyról és Erdély történetéről. Inspirálóan hatottak a különböző szintézisek munkálatai is. Az előadás fő tézise az, hogy az 1945−2016 közötti időszak politikai fejleményei jelentősen befolyásolták, de nem meghatározóan, hanem saját hagyományaival együtt formálták a magyar történettudományt.

Part 3) This paper makes an attempt to analyze the mindset of creative Hungarian intellec tuals who accepted various influential roles in Stalinist Hungary. It uses contemporary and other Hungarian and non-Hungarian patterns of intellectual behaviour as a basis of comparison. The survey addresses political, social, economic and cultural aspects of Hungarian history and concludes by arguing that the adoption of Christianity and the foundation of the Hungarian state by the first king, Steven the Saint, are the longest lasting achievements of Hungarian history, properly remembered by the most important national holiday, 20 August

A progresszió értelmezéseinek változásairól A tanulm ány abból az 1960-as-70-es évek fordulójáig ... more A progresszió értelmezéseinek változásairól A tanulm ány abból az 1960-as-70-es évek fordulójáig közkeletű nézetből indul ki, amely szerint nem kétséges, hogy m erre van előre: a történelem nem ciklikus körforgás, hanem teleologikus folyamat, a cél a felvilágosodás értékeinek (szabadság, egyenlőség, szolidaritás, műveltség, tudás) minél nagyobb körben, minél nagyobb m érték ben történő térnyerésének elősegítése. Áttekinti e paradigm a változásának okait, amelynek eredményeként a történészek m eghatározó többsége m a úgy gondolja, hogy az újragondolt történeti tudás nem a folytonos tökéletesedés útján halad, a m últtól a jövő felé h a ladva ism ereteink a m agunk m ögött hagyott m últról nem tökéletesednek, hanem a történészek pusztán a folyam a tos újraértelmezésekkel vannak elfoglalva. A tanulm ány megkérdőjelezi ezt a nézetet: ha általában és globálisan mai világunkban nehezen is értelm ezhető a progresszió, a haladás fogalm a, konkrét esetek elem zésében, a múlt értelm ezéseit is m agában foglaló döntéshelyzetekben, etikailag is form ált társadalm i felelősséggel élő értelm iségi ként aligha m ellőzhetjük a fogalom használatát.

Az előadás arra a kérdésre keres választ, hogy a magyar történettudomány második világháború után... more Az előadás arra a kérdésre keres választ, hogy a magyar történettudomány második világháború utáni történetében a politikai fordulatok milyen mértékben befolyásolták a szaktudomány intézményhálózatának, személyi állományának, kérdésfeltevéseinek, nemzetközi szakmai és magyar társadalmi visszhangjának alakulását. Az előzmények rövid áttekintése után 1949-et jelöli meg a "fordulat" évének. A függetlenségi törekvések és az osztályharc, az "elnyomott osztályok" történetének előtérbe állítása sematikus propagandaművek mellett máig értékesnek tartott eredményeket hozott a parasztság történetének kutatásában és lehetővé tette a magyar kapitalizmus története feltárásának megkezdését. Az erre épülő gazdaságtörténeti iskola hozott az 1960-as évek közepétől kezdődően nemzetközi elismertséget a magyar történettudomány számára. A politikatörténeti kutatásokat sajátos módon az a politikai értékelés lendítette előre, amely a "reakciós nacionalizmus" szerepét emelte ki az 1956-os "ellenforradalom" okai között. A politikus-történész Molnár Erik nevével fémjelzett vita során a nemzeti függetlenségi törekvések és az osztályküzdelmek viszonyát vizsgálva számos értékálló elemzés készült, többek között a Habsburg-magyar viszonyról és Erdély történetéről. Inspirálóan hatottak a különböző szintézisek munkálatai is. Az előadás fő tézise az, hogy az 1945−2016 közötti időszak politikai fejleményei jelentősen befolyásolták, de nem meghatározóan, hanem saját hagyományaival együtt formálták a magyar történettudományt.

Part 3) This paper makes an attempt to analyze the mindset of creative Hungarian intellec tuals who accepted various influential roles in Stalinist Hungary. It uses contemporary and other Hungarian and non-Hungarian patterns of intellectual behaviour as a basis of comparison.
