Mvemba a Nzinga, or Afonso I of the Kongo (c.1456-1543)
Son of João I. A baptised Christian. Studied with Portuguese priests and advisers. Offended more traditionally minded subjects in his efforts to convert his nation to Christianity. Fought civil war to consolidate power upon accession. Maintained a long correspondence with the Portuguese Kings, but relations chilled over the issue of illegal slave trading (he wanted a monopoly). Portugal tried to assassinate him in 1540, a dirty betrayal as far as I can tell.
