We are on to our next planet "Earth". To help the kids memorize the layers of the Earth I made them a felt layers of the Earth puzzle. I thought this would be more fun than a worksheet. I used a sparkly black felt as the base to represent "space". I printed some Montessori 3 part cards to use along with this activity. With all the talks about the effects on the ozone layer going around, my kids began asking me all about it. I knew what it was in theory and what people were saying we do to it, but I couldn’t quite explain it to them. The not knowing led me to do research on my own, and to teach about the layers of the atmosphere and their purpose around the Earth.

This Layers of the Earth informational reading, mini-poster project, and human model activity is a great way to cover the structure of Earth’s major layers in a fun and engaging way!

Today we learned about the layers of the Atmosphere. We made a model of the layers using aquarium rocks and recycled glass bottles along with some labels I found that worked well. The pictures I used to label our bottles are from http://www.theozonehole.com/atmosphere.htm. I attached the label with mod podge and then some of us glued/packing taped the larger label to the side and others used rubber bands after hole punching. Both worked well and it was just a matter of personal preference.
