Seb 💚 on Instagram: "👇 Pulling up plant roots is destroying your soil. It’s MUCH better for your soil to cut plants at the base and let them decompose naturally. Why? Beneficial bacteria in your soil actually form mutualistic relationships with your plant roots. Basically bacteria TRADE nutrients and minerals with your plants. This is why active healthy soil grows such beautiful plants without fertilizers or soil tests. The bacteria know what your plants want, and the plants trade carbon for the nutrients and minerals they need. Seriously. Plants and bacteria literally trade with each other. Plants can request specific nutrients and minerals and specific bacteria will come and fulfill the request. This sounds too good to be true? So bacteria like plant roots and want to stay n

Growing and making your own mustard is so easy. And mustard seed germinates in cool temperatures, so you can try this for much of the year. #growyourgroceries #growyourown #growyourownfood | Simon Akeroyd Garden Writer

458K views · 95K reactions | Saving Tomato Seeds! 🍅🌱 Tomatoes are some of my favourite crops to grow in the vegetable garden and saving your own seeds is super simple and satisfying too! 😊🍅 First, always try to select the best and fully ripe tomatoes to save from, and choose only un-hybridised open pollinated varieties, so avoid any with an F1 on the packet as they won’t reproduce true to variety. 🌱😕 If saving seed from a larger variety, like beefsteak, I would slice the tomato in half and open it up to reveal the seed cavities, then scoop out the seeds with a spoon or something similar and add to a glass jar or cup. 🫙🍅 If saving from a cherry tomato, it’s super simple, just give them a good squeeze. 🍅👌🏼 Top up the container with water to aid in fermentation, this will remove the germination inhibiting substance that surrounds the seed. 😊👍🏻 Then cover with a cloth or something similar to prevent fruit flies and odour and let sit for 3-4 days. I always make a nice pasata sauce with the left over tomatoes. 🍅😋 If mould develops, don’t worry that’s normal, but remove any seeds that float and then add more water and rinse and pour until the water runs clear. 💦🍅 Then pour through a fine strainer, give them a quick rinse to remove any of the remaining pulp and lay them out onto a plate or paper, spacing them apart before letting them dry for a couple of days. The seed will then be ready to be stored for next year, and I just pop them in a craft envelope and label. 😊👍🏻🍅🌱 So do you save your own tomato seeds? #seedsaving #growyourownfood #vegetablegarden #gardeningtips #organicgardening | Jamie Walton | Nettles & Petals

Seb 💚 on Instagram: "👇 Three sisters WORKS. Our industrial agricultural system has billions of dollars of investment into RnD, GMOs, fertilizers and the “best” scientists. And yet, Three Sisters consistently and reproducibly grows more biomass per acre than a monoculture. It also does this WITHOUT fertilizers, pesticides and it actually improves the health of the soil every year. How? Three Sisters leverages "niche complementarity," where each plant benefits the others: beans fix nitrogen, corn provides a structure for beans to climb, and squash acts as ground cover, reducing weeds and moisture loss. 🤓 Fun fact: there was also a 4th sister that was sometimes used. Can you guess what it is? (Hint, it’s a tall flower that was used to help attract pollinators and beneficial insect
Brianne Graber on Instagram: "People either love or loathe cilantro, I happen to love it. Here are a few more tips: If you are purchasing cilantro seed to grow, don’t buy it in packets. Instead buy a big bag of cilantro microgreens. They are the same seeds and you’ll get way more for your money. Learn to save your own seeds and you’ll never have to buy them again. Let me know if you’d like to see how I save and preserve my seeds here. Cilantro thrives in cool temps that are above freezing. If you have tried and failed growing cilantro in the past, you may have been growing it during too warm of temperatures. During warm temperature and/or times of stress, cilantro reacts by releasing bitter compounds and going straight to seed instead of staying nice and leafy and tasty. So keep them
Sandie on Instagram: "In nature- tomato seeds ferment when the rotting fruit meets the bacteria in the soil! This process drastically improves the germination rate of seeds- and is why I ferment my tomato seeds before saving them! I get nearly 100% germination from my saved seeds! 🙌🏻 P.S. I love science!! 🤓"

206K views · 13K reactions | I grow things for lots of reasons and harvesting my produce is just one of them. I share my love of gardening not just so more people will know how to grow food but so they (you) will get the many other benefits that makes people fall in love with gardening. The process of doing, watching, learning and taking the time to create something valuable by the time you invest in it. Lemongrass is just one of lots of projects in my new book ‘Give it a Grow’ that I hope will give people a mindset of possibility and curiosity beyond the harvest. (Link in my bio) What I did with my lemongrass:The thick stems fresh for cooking The leaves I trimmed from the thinner stems for winter, wrapped in to neat bundles and frozen to drop in to soups and stocksThe thicker outer parts of the stem cut in to strips and crushed with a rolling pin, frozen to add to infusions like turmeric milkThe leaves from the top of the thick stems, cut up and dried to make tea I was enjoying experimenting and will be interested to see the best uses of each part I’ve kept and stored in different ways. I’ve always found I learn most by doing and that’s what I love about growing food and cooking. The freedom to experiment. The soup is very loosely based on a Tom Yum for the initial stock base - but after that it is not traditional but is very tasty.600ml Stock - chicken or vegetable 1 crushed lemongrass 1 small chilli (depending on heat - this one’s fiery)3-4 slices of galangal4 kefir lime leaves2 cloves garlic rough chopped (In the past when I don’t have galangal and lime leaves I’ve used some fresh ginger and the outcome is also delicious) Simmer for 10-15 minutes Remove the aromatics then add Juice 1 lime Generous splash of fish sauce 1 tbsp sugar Handful of Mushrooms 10 Cherry Tomatoes halved 1 shallot cut in to strips Thick rice noodles (rice sticks) i recommend soaking these before adding, rather than just chucking them in like I did. The soup is already delicious but if you want it to be creamy - I add a tsp of red Thai curry paste and a little evaporated milk, although coconut milk would also work.
