Space☆Dandy

Dandy is a groovy, pompadour-wearing man who explores the stars in search of strange aliens for money, desiring to visit his favorite place: BooBies, the best diner in all the cosmos. Traversing the galaxies in his trusty ship, the Aloha Oe, Dandy is accompanied by his two equally unique friends: QT, the vacuum cleaner robot; and Meow, an alien with a cat-like appearance.

Although exciting, Dandy's job is never simple, and each new day promises a completely different, thrilling adventure. Together, Dandy and his crew get dragged into perilous journeys, misadventures in romance, and out of this world scenarios—all whilst steering clear of the evil scientist, Dr. Gel of the Gogol Empire.

My first review!

In Space Dandy we follow Dandy's adventures in space with his IQ robot QT and a cat-like alien named Meow. Every episode has a different topic/story to tell so it's not really a linear story even tho it is still connected and after each episode a conclusion is to be drawn.

The characters are somewhat one-dimensional at the beginning, for example Dandy is a very horny guy who loves and talks about tits & ass a lot (who doesn't) but after following them for a while these characters will develop.

Space Dandy explores a lot of topics from heartbreaks to being a outcast etc. there ... is definitely at least one topic that someone can identify with or relate to.

The art style and the visuals are amazing, since it's a show that takes place in space there will be a lot of trippy visuals accompanied with beautiful music. The soundtracks are funky and have a overall disco feeling. The ending song X Jigen e Youkoso by Etsuko Yakushimaru is inspired and sampled from the song Messages from the Stars by The RAH Band which i can highly recommend!

I enjoyed this anime a lot and i will watch season 2 in the near future 8/10

Mixed Feelings

So much wasted potential, baby.

Space Dandy has stunning art and animation, fun and vibrant characters and an interesting world. And it chooses to do very little with all of it. Space Dandy draws parallels with Cowboy Bebop but falls short of it on every metric.

The less serious tone of the show trades character development and emotional punch for shallow jokes and simple gags. Episode 5, in which Dandy escorts a young girl, reveals the show is capable of such depth but chooses not to do so often.

A lack of overarching story leads to a very episodic show. This isn't necessarily bad, but since ... the characters of the show are almost one dimensional, there is very little feeling of development via story or character growth.

The nonsensical plot and lack of consequences to the main characters cuts almost all the tension in the episodes. Seeing them getting blown up at the end of a scene doesn't mean they die, have lasting consequences or even acknowledge the event at the start of the next scene.

What carries this show is the beautiful art and animation. The galaxy explored is full of unique shapes, colours, and and creatures all wrapped up in a cool retro futuristic style . It is a seriously groovy experience that alone makes this show worth watching.

The action can also be done quite well, showcased best in episode 7's space race. Space Dandy's own take on redline, the episode takes itself seriously. Packed full of action and style, is had me on my seat for the whole length of it. Unfortunately other action scenes in the show tend to be hampered by the bizarre comedic tone that portrays Dandy as an ineffective hero.

Despite my criticisms, Space Dandy was still a fun watch. Just go in with low expectations and enjoy the ride, baby!

Despite everything it has going for it, Space Dandy is not a good show. Given its pedigree (animated by Bones in its heyday, directed by Cowboy Bebop's director, an amazing OST) its hard to go into this show with fair expectations but even after watching a few episodes and getting used to what it really offers you just can't shake the feeling that the show is wasting your time. Space Dandy is purely episodic (although events loosely build on each other anyway) which means its needs a solid cast and interesting situations to deliver entertainment and neither of those are present.

The three main characters ... of Space Dandy are Dandy, Meow, and QT and they're all extremely idiotic losers that never get anything done. Every episode is them looking for a quick way to make money so that they can slack off without being hungry, basically, and every episode is them screwing that up. This is a funny premise but because all the characters are idiots (even QT the "straight man" character) every episode is basically just random stuff happening to three not very likeable people that have almost no agency. Dumb Guy comedy works best when normal situations are ruined by poor decision making but Space Dandy is basically too wacky and random for anything to feel consequential.

Space Dandy's saving grace is that it looks and sounds amazing. The show really lays everything out in the first episode and if you think that episode is great and want exactly 12 more things exactly like that (or 25 if you're up for season 2) then go right ahead and enjoy. However, anyone that wants character development, something like a funny version of Cowboy Bebop, or an actually funny show then don't bother. Its not the worst show ever but there's just no point to it either.
