Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Dreams are doomed to die in Night City, a futuristic Californian metropolis. As a teenager living in the city's slums, David Martinez is trying to fulfill his mother's lifelong wish for him to reach the top of Arasaka, the world's leading security corporation. To this end, he attends the prestigious Arasaka Academy while his mother works tirelessly to keep their family afloat.

When an incident with a street gang leaves David's life in tatters, he stumbles upon Sandevistan cyberware—a prosthetic that grants its wearer superhuman speed. Fueled by rage, David implants the device in his back, using it to exact revenge on one of his tormentors. This gets him expelled from the academy, shattering his hopes of ever making his mother proud.

After witnessing David's newfound abilities, the beautiful data thief Lucyna "Lucy" Kushinada offers to team up with him, handing him a ticket to salvation. However, associating with Lucy introduces David to the world of Edgerunners—cyborg criminals who will break any law for money. Edgerunners often lose their lives, if the cyberware does not break their minds first; but in his fight for survival inside a corrupt system, David is ready to risk it all.

Great visuals, well-written story, sound tracks are the best, and man the ending broke me. I don't write reviews, but this show blew me away.

Story and world are really unique, characters are well-rounded, and I recommend to everyone who has heard of it. Wish I could wipe my memory just to watch it again. Have never cried so much, and even just a painting of an alternate ending made me sad.

Grave stones in the game also made me sad; Story is told so well, each piece of the episode is well thought-out, and the transition from happy to more and more realistic was a slow ... and painful death for the watcher. David's life is tragic from start to finish, but his ability to make Lucy's dream come true makes it all the more fulfilling in the end.

Mixed Feelings

Action-packed and gory. I watched this anime because it came so highly recommended, but I have mixed feelings about this show. I have no prior knowledge of the game this is inspired by, so this is purely a review of the show.

For the positives, I have to highlight the art. Like other Trigger works, the art is distinctive, sharp, eye catching and well done. The character designs are creative and fun, and I especially liked Rebecca and Lucy's designs. The visual effects are bold and made the show visually interesting - it was cool how the effects of cyber-enhancement were shown. The landscape of ... Night City is also beautiful.

Despite this, it took me a long time to finish the show. I'm not sure if it's because every episode was so info or gore heavy, but I wasn't really left feeling like I should continue right away. While the first half of the show had a more clear direction, I think it starts getting a bit messy after that. There were many things that I would have been interested to see, such as more backstory behind Kiwi and Rebecca - same goes for characters that I ended up having a weak impression of, like Tanaka and Faraday (he seems especially one-sided as far as motives go). I also was left with lots of questions about Arasaka and Militech and the Night City world in general. The world-building could have been stronger.

I would consider this anime a love story. My favourite scenes revolved around David and Lucy's interactions, and those also felt the most emotionally charged to me. I think if I were to change anything about this show, I would either hone in further on their dynamic, or pull back for a larger ensemble cast focus.

Not sure if I would rewatch, but it's a fast-paced and aesthetically pleasing show.

Bro... I ain't even know where to begin with this absolute atrocity, I never thought anything could have topped the disaster that was the games launch but the surprise this caused me was MASSIVE, Watching this dropped me to a new all time LOW that it almost caused me to FADE out of existence.

Don't even get me started on the writing, a bit of moldy bread could write a better story, the character development just straight up doesn't exist, David Martinez is NOT the goat and the fact that he won't be in the second season actually brings me a sense of relief. man Lucy, ... holy mother of life she's such an annoying character, acting all cool and shit, but for what, to cry at the end. such a joke.

Back to the fact this is getting a second season, like who the flip asked, show some respect and stop dragging the anime, let it die, everything about this anime just irritates me. game was trash and so is this. I'm appalled that this won anime of the year, literally anything that came out that year was better.

Now I have to live knowing that I've consumed such utter disrespect in media form, i'll never have a good nights sleep ever again.

an actual disgusting watch.
