Koi wa Sekai Seifuku no Ato de

Fudou Aikawa and Desumi Magahara have just started dating, but no one is allowed to know! Nicknamed "Red Gelato," Fudou is the leader of "Gelato 5," a group of heroes dedicated to protecting Japan. On the other hand, the "Reaper Princess" Desumi is one of the combatant leaders of "Gekko," an evil secret society bent on world domination and considered Gelato 5's greatest foe. As they pretend to be mortal enemies, Fudou and Desumi sneak away from battle to spend time together.

Despite their inexperience with romance, Fudou and Desumi strive to make their relationship work while avoiding suspicion from their comrades. With their loyalties divided between each other and their respective sides, the couple will have to stay on guard if they want to keep their love a secret from the rest of the world.

This anime is a rom-com about the forbidden love between a hero and villain in a tokusatsu based setting. Fudou is the red member of the hero team Gelato 5. Desumi is one of the leaders of Gekko, an evil organization with the goals of world domination. Despite that, they’re deeply in love. The anime begins with them already going out, though it does have a few flashbacks to show how that came to be. The focus is on how they do their best to progress as a couple despite having to keep their relationship a secret.

There is some level of progression from story to ... story in terms of the circumstances of characters changing. However, beyond that there isn’t really much in the way of an overarching plot. Most episodes are divided into two distinct halves, each with a separate story. Most of these stories are centered around Fudou and Desumi, but a good amount also focus on those around them. All in all, I found these stories somewhat of a mixed bag. Some were great, such as the one centered around Desumi’s relationship with her sister. Some were pretty bad, such as the ones centered around love triangles. And most were somewhere in the middle. Still, all in all I would say they were pretty good. While no one in the cast is all that deep, they’re quite a lot of fun characters and the relationship between Fudou and Desumi is heartwarming. The comedy is good too. Ultimately, I was invested enough that the finale felt like a satisfying conclusion.

This anime was quite different than I expected though. The whole tokusatsu aspect really isn’t as prominent as I thought it would be. It does show up quite a bit, but its basically just there in the background with the stories not really having much to do with it. It’s mostly just an aesthetic choice. This anime also doesn’t really play on the tropes or anything like that, so it didn’t really feel like satire or parody. Like sure, it shows the human side to Gekko, but it didn’t really feel like it was doing so for comedic effect. It also felt like the writing was being pretty inconsistent with the the main couple trying to keep their relationship a secret. At times they’re super strict about it, but at others they’re absurdly casual to the point that it doesn’t feel like they’re trying to keep things a secret at all. And this can often play into the plot, resulting in things not really making much sense. Still, this anime doesn’t take itself too seriously so it isn’t that much of an issue.

The art and animation were decent enough. The action was a mixed bag but a few scenes were great. The character and monster designs for the most part were good too. The OP was good in terms of the song and visuals. There were also some random changes to the OP song in a couple episodes, which was pretty amusing. The ED was decent in terms of both the song and visuals. The soundtrack was also pretty good.

tl;dr: A solid rom-com about a secret relationship with some light tokatsu elements.

Mixed Feelings

I felt like I was watching the anime the anime character is supposed to watch inside the anime itself to avoid copyright laws.

The overall concept is great, but it's an anime heavily dependent on interesting and unique characters, which becomes a problem when the characters have little to no identifiable traits and are just bland, boring, and cliche. There really isn't anything inherently wrong with this show, it's just your generic romance, and there are some instances where it is above-average in the entertainment department, but they never did anything to flesh out any aspect of the series. Not to mention, the conflict between Gekko ... and Gelato feels more like "we're gonna spar in public but frame it as hero vs. supervillain so we can do what we want without regard to public safety" rather than an actual fight between good and evil. From the world-building to the characters, there's nothing special about the series and it has very little unique qualities. Desumi is the only character that has notable depth, but that actually becomes a con when you feel the contrast between her and every other character.

The only episode that sticks out is episode 7, which focused on the fact that another member from Gelato knew Desumi when she was a little girl. Because the episode was revolved around Desumi and that member, and the member's writing in this specific episode actually made him feel like a well-rounded character, it was the most entertaining in the series for me. However, you know something is wrong when a show fleshed out characters so poorly that it took 7 episodes to properly introduce one of the protagonist's direct allies and, even after, you still don't remember his name.

Unless you really like watching generic romance animes or are as patient as me and give shows a lot of leeway if you like the concept, I wouldn't recommend this show, but I still have very mixed feelings because its flaw is unoriginality and blandness, not that it's bad.

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

There is not a lot to say about this show. It's what I would colloquially describe as a 5/10 show, but even that's a little generous. This is watch and forget television. It has a pretty unique premise and setting, however it manages to do less unique and interesting things than something like Komi-san or Azumanga Daioh, both of which have arguably mundane and retreaded settings and plot devices.

The art, the animation, the character design, the jokes, none of it is particularly bad, none of it is particularly good. Even by the standards of feel good, by the numbers romance, when you have so ... many options out there why would you pick this? If you've ever walked into the cereal aisle, seen 20 boxes of Korn Flakes, from 20 different brands, this is that. This does not contribute anything, nor does it take away.

I understand that sometimes you just want a mid tier show to not focus on, but even then you have so many choices. The one character I did like was the warrior on the evil side, who constantly gets clowned on. Even she is just an archetype of the character I like, that I have seen done better 100 times. This is not a terrible show, but just why? Why does it exist?
