Otonari no Tenshi-sama ni Itsunomanika Dame Ningen ni Sareteita Ken

Mahiru Shiina is worthy of her nickname "Angel": she is a divine beauty loved by all, and she excels in both academics and athletics. Shiina lives in an entirely different world from Amane Fujimiya, her next-door neighbor. Despite living so close together, they have never spoken once. But their silence is broken when Fujimiya spots Shiina gloomily sitting on a swing amidst a heavy rainstorm and lends her his umbrella.

When Fujimiya catches a cold the next day, Shiina wishes to return the favor for the umbrella by nursing him back to health. Believing that this would be their first and last interaction, he silently appreciates her kindness. However, Shiina—who cannot help but worry about Fujimiya's lack of tidiness and proper nutrition—begins to cook and clean for him. As the unlikely pair spend time together in Fujimiya's apartment, they explore the true nature of their relationship and the gentle emotions that emerge from it.

MAHIRU-CHAN!

From the director who gave us Steins;Gate and Nana, you’d expect something at least competent, and The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten mostly delivers on that front. The story? It’s a predictable one, no question, boy meets girl, they’re polar opposites, etc. But if you’re into this genre, that’s part of the appeal. It’s formulaic, yes, but there’s something oddly satisfying about watching the formula executed well.

The art is clean and works well with the tone, though don’t expect any real visual flair. The character designs are pleasant, and they help sell the central dynamic between Amane and Mahiru. Speaking of which, the characters ... themselves aren’t anything groundbreaking. Mahiru plays the tsundere role with a bit of depth, and Amane’s kind of an oblivious, well-meaning guy. They both have their flaws, which makes them more relatable, even if they occasionally toe the line of being annoyingly predictable.

Story 15 % 6/10
A love story that is kept simple, there is no real drama, no fire... the reason why you watch this kind of anime is missing at this point. The anime is too predictable, the story is very straightforward with a clear and obvious goal. However, as the anime here relates specifically to the main characters, it still stands out slightly.

Pacing / narrative flow 20 % 5/10
Unfortunately, as I said, there is no drama, almost no highs and lows... very monotonous. But at least the anime doesn't feel stretched out, so it's enjoyable to watch despite its ... weaknesses.

Animation 15 % 5/10
The animations are very colorful and simple at the same time. At this point, the anime looks like a typical “modern” anime but without really being able to convey its own soul. It seems more like a means to an end.

Character depth 25% 4.5/10
Unfortunately, the anime hardly scores at this point, although this should be its real strength in the genre. There are actually only 4 relevant characters in the anime, 2 main and 2 secondary characters. Both the main and the side characters are too flat... especially the side characters really have almost no charm of their own and the background stories of the characters unfortunately also seem too boring, too simple.

Worldbuilding 5 % 5/10
The anime consists almost entirely of the protagonists' apartment; there are rarely any scenes from outside. That's not necessarily a bad thing, if it's packaged well, it can even be really good. Nevertheless, you have to know what you're getting yourself into at this point. Since it can't offer anything special here, it's only good enough for average.

Music / sound design 5 % 6/10
The music is kept simple, very repetitive. It's not bad, but it doesn't stick in your head either... at least the intro fits the anime and doesn't sound too bad.

Overall impression 5 % 5/10
You definitely have to realize what you're watching here. It's not bad, but unfortunately it's not good either. If you are looking for an anime where the love story is really clearly related to the main characters, you might find it here. Despite everything, it's only good enough for an average rating as it doesn't really shine in any area. But maybe that will change in the 2nd season.

Eine Liebesgeschichte die einfach gehalten ist, es gibt keinen wirklichen Drama, kein Feuer... der Grund warum man solche Art von Animes schaut, fehlt an der dieser Stelle. Der Anime ist zu vorhersehbar, die Story ist sehr geradlinig mit einem Klaren und offensichtlichem Ziel. Da der Anime hier sich speziell auf die Hauptcharaktere bezieht, sticht er hier aber dennoch leicht raus.

Pacing / Erzählfluss 20 % 5/10
Leider gibt es wie gesagt kein Drama, fast keine höhen und tiefen.. sehr monoton. Der Anime fühlt sich aber immerhin nicht gestreckt an, sodass er trotz der schwächen angenehm zu gucken ist.

Animation 15 % 5/10
Die Animationen sind sehr Bunt und gleichzeitig schlicht gehalten. An dieser Stelle sieht der Anime aus wie ein typischer "moderner" Anime aber ohne wirklich eine eigene Seele vermitteln zu können. Es wirkt eher als mehr Mittel zum Zweck.

Charaktertiefe 25 % 4,5/10
Leider Punktet der Anime an dieser Stelle kaum, obwohl dies seine eigentliche Stärke in dem Genre sein müsste. Es gibt eigentlich nur 4 relevante Charakter in dem Anime, 2 Haupt und 2 Nebencharaktere. Sowohl die Haupt, als auch die Nebencharaktere sind zu flach.. vor allem die Nebencharaktere haben wirklich fast keinen eigenen Charme und die Hintergrundgeschichten der Charaktere wirken auch leider zu langweilig, zu einfach.

Worldbuilding 5 % 5/10
Der Anime besteht fast komplett nur aus der Wohnung der Protagonisten, selten gibt es auch Szenen von außerhalb. Das ist nicht unbedingt schlecht, wenn es man gut verpackt, kann es sogar richtig gut werden. Dennoch muss man wissen worauf man sich an dieser Stelle einlässt. Da er hier nichts besonderes bieten kann, reicht es nur für den durchschnitt.

Musik / Sounddesign 5 % 6/10
Die Musik ist einfach gehalten, sehr repetitiv. Sie ist nicht schlecht, bleibt aber auch nicht im Kopf hängen... das Intro passt immerhin zum Anime und hört sich gar nicht so schlecht an.

Gesamteindruck 5 % 5/10
Definitiv muss man sich an der Stelle klar machen was man hier sieht. Er ist nicht schlecht, aber nunmal leider auch nicht gut. Wer einen Anime sucht wo die Liebesgeschichte sich wirklich klar auf die Hauptcharaktere bezieht, könnte hier aber fündig werden. Trotz allem reicht es nur für eine durchschnittliche Bewertung da er in keinem Bereich wirklich glänzen kann. Vielleicht ändert sich das aber in der 2. Staffel.

Quite boring, very little happens and it is modelling some messed up relationship dynamics. The only fun part for me was making fun of how many wordless noises the main characters made, they sounded like Zelda NPCs.

If you want a good high school romance with more interesting characters and plot then maybe try Komi Can't Communicate or Kaguya-sama Love is War. As for this anime, the story was not unique and very predictable, the characters managed to be both unrealistic and uninteresting at the same time. I suppose the art was decent but they reused a fair number of settings (omg the yellow couch) ... and shots.
